Congratulations for a soft landing on the Moon.

Is restarting of the engines possible for SLIM? For an attempted hop or attitude change.

I assumed the right front wheel image was one of the cameras on the mast looking sideways or something. So it's a full resolution subframe of the other front hazcam.
These cameras are something else than the b/w one megapixel cameras we've been used to since MER.

Interesting Mole Update 'DLR HP3 Blog' link

QUOTE
Depending on the outcome of the diagnostic hammering, our next operation could be using the arm to load the support structure close to the fore-right-foot (the one you see in the image above) or the ground right next to the support structure near the tether box.

I don't quite understand the operation plans above. Are they talking about moving the frame of the mole?

For years Spirit's and Opportunity's images were like an extra window in my house, one I could use to look into another world first thing in the morning. There were many exhilirating moments of exploration, saves through engineering wizardy and unexpected events. One moment bright in my memory is the first cleaning event, the realisation that the mission could go on longer than just a simple mission extension...

Thanks to the team for the inspiring science and uncompromising engineering. Thanks to the members of the forum for keeping the mission a collective experience through all these years of Mars and Earth.

Probably they figure that it is less risky to do the deployment in one (well practised) move, than leaving the instrument dangling on the tether for longer periods of time.

Congratulations to the team!

(The PNG file on the raw images site is not complete, the bottom of the image is missing.) Edit: it's fixed now

Complete image at least in Emily's article here (from twitter?) http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakda...has-landed.html

Congrats Insight Team!

NASA TV Media channel is showing the Insight mission control, but as far as I can see, there is no audio (yet?)

The Rasmus - F-F-F-Falling

"I need a flame, I need a spark
Don't be afraid to open my heart
I need a game, I need a shock
Don't be afraid my heart is unlocked
Made up my mind 'bout the music
Made up my mind 'bout the style
I know that I'm stable and able
To settle down

After a review of the progress of the listening campaign, NASA will continue its current strategy for attempting to make contact with the Opportunity rover for the foreseeable future. Winds could increase in the next few months at Opportunity's location on Mars, resulting in dust being blown off the rover's solar panels. The agency will reassess the situation in the January 2019 time frame.

Cheers to Nasa for continuing the effort!

DSS 36 carrier lock on Opportunity
Frequency: 8.4351GHz
Signal strength: -164dBm
IDLE OFF 1 MCD2
8:26 AM - 29 Sep 2018 from Paddys River, Canberra

Ticks more of the criteria set in this thread, but just a carrier lock.

Well, that momentary carrier lock at 8.4351GHz was a lot closer to the expected Oppy frequency (8.4358GHz you pointed before), than Maven's 8.4454GHz... But yeah, maybe it's the doppler shift around the orbit.

Different from MRO, but looking at the history, Odyssey's frequency is almost the same (8.4067GHz vs 8.4068GHz above), so not sure if there is some possibility of confusion there for a carrier lock.

Thanks Doug for that link.

Just now I noticed:
Attached Image

Just now, there isn't a live signal or carrier, but DSS 35 is sending a data signal to Oppy.

No exact timing mentioned but the Puna radiotelescope seeing the UHF signal lost it at some point when Schiaparelli would have been in powered flight or at landing.

Listening to Schiapparelli? On what Chanel laugh.gif ?

Yeah, that could be a problem. I'm pretty sure lander to lander communications were not on top of their minds when these things were designed. Also the radiation cone from the UHF antenna would be pointing in wrong direction, but proximity should definitely help with that.

With Oppy being so close, was there any consideration on having it listen to Schiapparelli on UHF during the EDL?

Thanks Paolo, that's the info I need.

To summarise:
An Indian radio telescope in Pune might detect if Schiapparelli is transmitting at all, live.
MEX and MRO will record a subset of telemetry, which could be received at 16:30 and 16:45 UTC on the landing day.
TGO will record full telemetry and it should be available 10h later, at 1:00 UTC.

I tried to look for information about coverage of the Schiapparelli landing events and communications. Only thing mentioned seems to be that MEX will record the lander's signal for later transmission. Anyone know when that transmission would come? Any chance of following Schiapparelli live, even detection of the carrier signal with radio telescopes like was done with Huygens?

I guess I've gotten too used to Nasa lander style blow-by-blow earth receive time coverage with first pictures arriving minutes after the landing.

I assume at least the orbiter will stay in constant DSN contact during the insertion.

An update from the above source: http://tiedetuubi.fi/NODE/2147 .

Main points:
- ESA press officer Pål Hvistendahl confirms Rosetta received something
- No useful data received, but new attempts will be made when Rosetta is in Philae's view
- on the night of Dec 21/22 a signal was received
- telemetry packets were received but they did not contain useful information
- signals on this frequency should be only from Philae
- Philae will only transmit after it has succesfully received a packet from Rosetta

Some details here by a Finnish space journalist: http://tiedetuubi.fi/avaruus/komeettalaske...en-saatu-yhteys

Interesting bits:
- the radio contact lasted for 10 seconds at 3:17 EET (1:17 UTC) last night
- 51 packets were received by Philae mission control in Cologne

Yeah, they have a "unique" way of informing things about Philae / Rosetta.

But they do have science instruments there, and are within the official ESA loop. The sources are Walter Schmidt and Minna Palmroth at FMI.
