Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Phoenix _ Phoenix EDL SUCCESS!!!!!

Posted by: ElkGroveDan May 25 2008, 10:13 PM

All Phoenix commentary is now being directed over here.

Posted by: kwan3217 May 25 2008, 10:15 PM

What is the exact peanut deployment sequence? I have my jar of peanuts, unopened. Am I supposed to wait until EDL, until we hear it succeed?

Posted by: Alex Chapman May 25 2008, 10:16 PM

Wonder what that data is on the left screen at the back?

They have real time Doppler data and they are detecting Mars Gravity!!!

Posted by: ustrax May 25 2008, 10:16 PM

Checking in! biggrin.gif

1 hour 38 minutes from Mars!

Posted by: dvandorn May 25 2008, 10:16 PM

OK, good. I almost endng up spending the next little bit of this time on the phone to Comcast. Just after NASA TV here started the no-commentary coverage at 5pm my time, the screen went blank. All other channels were working, just not NASA TV.

I was actually working my way through the Comcast phone menu when it came back up just a couple of minutes ago.

Last night I was just about to go to bed and there, believe it or not, was a little mouse swimming in the toilet. Improbable as it sounds our Cat must have brought it in just a few moments before and for some reason have dropped it in the toilet. I rescued it and set it free outside.
So an event that’s very improbable occurred and the little guy survived both my cat and a potential drowning to live another day. That’s my good omen.

Only watching NasaTV through a sluggish connection, so will appreciate comments from you lucky enough to get nasatv on cable.

Commentary starting in 3 minutes...

Video's gone down - hope this is not an omen.

Posted by: dvandorn May 25 2008, 10:30 PM

Whichever NASA TV gets ported into my cable system had been running to no-commentary views of the control room, and now have a "coming up" slide for the beginning of commentary at 5:30.

Video has popped in and out for me a couple of times over the past half hour, I figure at this point that this is just NASA getting their feeds straight.

I got this material from an official source but I don't have a link. It doesn't answer your question but it is related.

Anticipated pace of Mars surface operations wheel.gif

-- If operations proceed relatively smoothly, the first eight to 10 days after landing will be a "characterization phase" of checking out and understanding the performance of the spacecraft's power and thermal systems, as well as the robotic arm and other instruments.
-- At the end of the characterization phase (date tba), the first sample of surface soil will be delivered to the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer onboard Phoenix.
-- Analysis of soil from the surface in both the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer and in the Microscopy, Electrochemistry and Conductivity Analyzer will likely take 10 to 15 days if all processes go well. After that, each additional sampling cycle will reach a deeper subsurface level, in increments of about two to three centimeters. At each different layer, collecting and analyzing samples is expected to take 10 to 15 days, barring operational difficulties.
-- How soon the digging reaches the expected icy layer will depend on how far below the surface that layer lies. Estimates in advance of landing range from two to five centimeters. If the ice is at the deeper end of that range, the first analysis of an icy sample could be in July or later.

Posted by: PaulW May 25 2008, 11:08 PM

Not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but live coverage just started on Science Channel. If your cable system doesn't carry NASA TV and you don't want to watch it on computer this looks like a reasonable alternative.

Two hours of live coverage is scheduled, followed by repeats of one hour MRO documentary and Roving Mars.

What is the reason that Phoenix will use Pulse thrusters to land on Mars instead of chemical thrusters which were used others spacecrafts landing on Moon?

I know that the 2 Vikings used the same Pulse Thrusters Technology. What are the advantages of using that technology?

One important thing is that the spacecraft will have about 600 kg on Earth or about 198 kgs on Mars.

I suspect that the pulsed thrusters has an advantage to damage less on the surface than a chemical engine.

Watching the simulation at the same time as watching NASA tv was great and the music went well with the comentary.

Posted by: Tom Tamlyn May 26 2008, 12:08 AM

>0.25 degree tilt confirmed !!

That's flat. I wonder if we'll see any rocks at all.

TTT

Posted by: SFJCody May 26 2008, 12:12 AM

What with the flatness and the dd.gif I advise everyone to examine the first images of the footpads when they come down for some anomalous red footwear.

Posted by: Alex Chapman May 26 2008, 12:16 AM

I think someone must have laid a concrete slab for Phoenix to Land on to get just 0.25 degrees of tilt. No chance of rocks under any of the feet!!!

Now all the excitement is over it’s the long quiet wait till those first images arrive. Its 1:30am here in the UK but there is no going to bed for this space cadet. I couldn’t think of going to bed before I get my first look at Green Valley. Got to see just how flat and featureless it really. God it’s nice to be down

BTW, I do know at least one of the Tucson channels had live coverage, I just don't know which one...

Just wanna confirm - it is 6:43pm PDT that the first images are expected.

The way I understand it is that at that time the images will be coming into JPL and
any chance for us to see them will be on NASA TV shots of the screens at JPL.

They will be on full display at the press briefing (formerly scheduled for 9pm pacific time but
now the NASA TV site says: ""9:30 p.m. - Mars Phoenix Lander Briefing - First Downlink of Data - JPL")
