All Phoenix commentary is now being directed over here.
What is the exact peanut deployment sequence? I have my jar of peanuts, unopened. Am I supposed to wait until EDL, until we hear it succeed?
Wonder what that data is on the left screen at the back?
They have real time Doppler data and they are detecting Mars Gravity!!!
Checking in!
1 hour 38 minutes from Mars!
OK, good. I almost endng up spending the next little bit of this time on the phone to Comcast. Just after NASA TV here started the no-commentary coverage at 5pm my time, the screen went blank. All other channels were working, just not NASA TV.
I was actually working my way through the Comcast phone menu when it came back up just a couple of minutes ago.
-the other Doug
Kendal checking in... good luck everyone
phoenuts to be eaten BEFORE EDL, otherwise they don`t work!
My dog just landed in the couch...I'll face that as a good sign...
Got it; glad it's locked down. GO PHOENIX!!!!
Nix, I'm having breakfast at ths time (I woke up one hour ago). Champagne is next thou
my cats have been lying around here for days... yeah let's take it as a good sign
Ahh, cheers climber !!
Go Phoenix, GO!
Nico
People in mission control are beginning to jostle listlessly around.... understandable!
All set here, beer and peanuts.
Michael
Florida.
1h30 to landing ERT
Robert
One of my blueberry bushes produced it's first ripe blueberries today. I'm taking this as a Sign.
Go Phoenix!
-Mike
Is the party in here? Where is everyone? Over at Ustream?
And I can't say Ustream without thinking of Ustrax
Here, the NASA TV stil does not play. How are yours? (Public Channel is supposed to start at 5 pm at GMT-5.)
Mines playing fine on the 500k stream
It's much better here, with good ol' friends ...
I got agoraphobia at freenode ... I must be getting old. :-)
Only watching NasaTV through a sluggish connection, so will appreciate comments from you lucky enough to get nasatv on cable.
Go Phoenix !!!
Listener, I'm watching NASA TV just fine... go here...
http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/nasa/index.html
No commentary yet, that starts at half past...
I'm getting NASA TV OK at this site:
http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/nasa/index.html
Commentary starting in 3 minutes...
Video's gone down - hope this is not an omen.
Whichever NASA TV gets ported into my cable system had been running to no-commentary views of the control room, and now have a "coming up" slide for the beginning of commentary at 5:30.
Video has popped in and out for me a couple of times over the past half hour, I figure at this point that this is just NASA getting their feeds straight.
-the other Doug
Mark Lemmon just passed by spacEurope to thanks us all by the support and to tell us how things are going at SOC...
Video back now - slow down on the whisky
Getting sound now from NASA TV
Blood pressure rising dangerously
Sound's ok but images looks like a slide show. Must be A LOT watching
Still just a Coming Up screen at the nasatv web stream ...
Watching NASA TV - right now it's just has a documentary about the EDL sequence. No live coverage yet.
May I open my jar of peanuts now?
direct link to public feed -
http://www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx
and the media feed
http://www.nasa.gov/145590main_Digital_Media.asx
both play in QuickTime for mac fine side by side to the Phoenix Real Time Script....
less than an hour to go
Chemist... try refreshing your screen or try http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/nasa/index.html
The EDL timeline graphic shows the landing at 4:53:36 pm. Column heading says "Eastern Time (Estimated)." The PAO person just corrected it, but...
-the other Doug
Checking in...
Peanuts being munched and beer is being drunk, anything else I can do to help?
J
Can one be here without peanuts or are they compulsory?
Enjoying Nasa's feed - clear as anything here.
..........7 minutes of hell..........WOWEE..........
Really starting to physically feel the tension now Don't know how those folks directly involved with the mission cope with this .. if it were me there, I think i'd need some valium.
NASA-TV is just showing a really cool computer simulation based on where it should be at each point. It looks live and not part of the HUD movie. Anyone know if that's available?
-Mike
Now under an hour - pop the peanuts
1 hour to cruise stage separation.
I read somewhere only 1 trench will be dug. Is this true?
Thanks Stu, now it works again ...
Got to get some coffee now ...
Peanut jar opened. Peanuts of choice: Honey roasted peanuts.
I opened my peanuts a couple of hours ago and have been munching them slowly. I'll have plenty to last through the landing.
Honey-roasted, m'self.
-the other Doug
1h to landing ERT
We are go for peanut deployment. Initiate the packet sequence.
I opened my peanuts jar when NASA TV coverage began.
That's within nominal peanut eating parameters.
OMG.. I just found some peanuts in a kitchen cupboard left over from Christmas ... best before date is 29th March 2008.
.....eats a couple.
Guess that less than an hour is time to listen to http://youtube.com/watch?v=7AiSbxZYViE&feature=related...
centsworth_II...it works for me perfectly...I think...but I'm...for hours...on wiiwii mode...
A peanut smiley would be good at this point.
The timeline on the NASA blog latest entry shows entry and landing happening about 19 seconds before the realtime display on dmuller.net

I got this material from an official source but I don't have a link. It doesn't answer your question but it is related.
Anticipated pace of Mars surface operations
-- If operations proceed relatively smoothly, the first eight to 10 days after landing will be a "characterization phase" of checking out and understanding the performance of the spacecraft's power and thermal systems, as well as the robotic arm and other instruments.
-- At the end of the characterization phase (date tba), the first sample of surface soil will be delivered to the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer onboard Phoenix.
-- Analysis of soil from the surface in both the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer and in the Microscopy, Electrochemistry and Conductivity Analyzer will likely take 10 to 15 days if all processes go well. After that, each additional sampling cycle will reach a deeper subsurface level, in increments of about two to three centimeters. At each different layer, collecting and analyzing samples is expected to take 10 to 15 days, barring operational difficulties.
-- How soon the digging reaches the expected icy layer will depend on how far below the surface that layer lies. Estimates in advance of landing range from two to five centimeters. If the ice is at the deeper end of that range, the first analysis of an icy sample could be in July or later.
Jack
Go Phoenix!!1
TCM cabinet heaters have been activated.
Check Emily blog; SS said the'll test driving with the arm out and it works. SO, Oppy's gona drive this week. Good mood, good mood
I think, I've spoted Ed Weiller on NTV.
Fasten your seat belt and stow your tray table, we are 48 minutes from landing
Go Pheonix, safe landing
Actually that was prolly a bit stronger than what SS said...better modify that with his usual qualifiers...they haven't made a "go-nogo" decision on that yet.
--E
VERY well done on the UStream chat Emily, it went really well. We chased "tatoo guy" off for ya! :-)
My peanuts have been deployed, and now I have to wiiwii....
For those watching streams on the Net, be aware that all streams are delayed, sometimes as much as a minute.
"Absurd Accuracy is Our Obsession"
--Kwan Systems official motto
The Science Channel on cable in the US has coverage that just started and will go until 9 EST .
Odyssey is GO for EDL comm support...
Not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but live coverage just started on Science Channel. If your cable system doesn't carry NASA TV and you don't want to watch it on computer this looks like a reasonable alternative.
Two hours of live coverage is scheduled, followed by repeats of one hour MRO documentary and Roving Mars.
Paul
hey Emily, thanks for answering my question on when the HiRISE images will hit the ground. Was curious if I should head into work for a bit tomorrow to hover over someone's shoulder.
Is there a way to set this thread to auto refresh? I should really know ow to work the board by now
And it's so weird to see Emily here and then over at ustream and then at PB..... it's like that episode of the brady bunch when peter had two dates for prom and he had to keep running back and forth between them
This is the first time that I watch a landing live on NASA TV. Watching the Real-Time Simulation on dmuller.net as well.
~5 minutes until the pass of phobos orbit will be received on earth ^^...
Changing batteries?
Copy that !
Anybody know if there's a feed that can go to full screen (or something larger than on nasa tv)?
With a PC use F5 to refresh
Looks like dmuller is ahead of time on pressurisation
30 minutes to landing
GO Phoenix
watching NASA TV, CNN, Science Channel , TPS simultaneiusly
got a good feeling
ken
And the big bosses are there to watch...
Propulsion system pressurized! Go Phoenix!
I'm worried about Attitude Control - He could have gone for a pee or he could have gone home to shave off that awful beard!
Not full screen with me in IE
I am now Go for beer, that will surely change my atitude control
Just open the following link with Windows Media Player 10 or 11:
http://www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx
I'm watching it in fullscreen...
EDIT:
VLC Media Player seems to work too...
Right clicking does it fine
Try double-clicking on the image, it works when the main button doesn't answer.
Has everyone else lost Emilys blog enteries?
Arrgh, the tension... it's just hit me that this is really going to happen.
OUr ^%*(&*&^$*% website just went down!!
What is the reason that Phoenix will use Pulse thrusters to land on Mars instead of chemical thrusters which were used others spacecrafts landing on Moon?
I know that the 2 Vikings used the same Pulse Thrusters Technology. What are the advantages of using that technology?
One important thing is that the spacecraft will have about 600 kg on Earth or about 198 kgs on Mars.
I suspect that the pulsed thrusters has an advantage to damage less on the surface than a chemical engine.
I ve seen good luck peanuts !
Probably my fault for pressing the refresh button every couple of minutes
The Solar System Simulator page seems to be down too.
100 post in this topic in 1h30 hours. I guess that's a record
Go Phoenix - take the heat
sorry to hear that Emily.
I've hit the play button but I'm totaly lost at this stage
At about this time during MER's EDL, the coolant was being purged from the spacecraft. Will that happen here too?
Our IT guy is rebooting the web server, don't know how long that will take.
Mission Control is really cool, but I still love the old Apollo MC footiage, with the guys calculating stuff using slide-rules
4 minutes to cruise stage separation and 20 minutes from now we may know if EDL is a success or not...
She's in atmosphere now, ate all my peanuts in a gulp...go, sweet baby, GO!!!!!
25,000 mph to nil in 7 minutes. Perhaps your slide rule would like to work that out in g's !
Data relay through Mars Odyssey should begin shortly.... I hope that this works ...
If everything went well she landed...now!
Peanuts gone - flying free
dam'... should've bought peanut futures....
DOWN - holding breath
Good luck Pheonix!
GO babe
ustrax - Landing at 53:52 in about 13 mins but add a 10 minute delay before we here.
If everything went well Phoenix is now sitting on the surface of Mars but we don't know anything yet... $%#*&# slow speed of light ;-).
Odyssey data coming up...
Odyssey data stream is being received .
Cruise stage sep confirmed!!
Cruise stage separated.
Cruise stage sep!

See the peanuts!!
Oh My God!!! Here we go lol
AAh! Here we go! Good Luck!
There's certainly no turning back NOW...
1 minute from the 7 minutes of Terror !!!
215 (!!) online users at UMSF now
To cut through the BS of overburdened servers, I'm totally counting on refreshing THIS thread to get the news. As long as light is so slow, I might as well add in the minimal lag of the swiftest of you to relay the news here.
Atmospheric entry
WOOHOOO, I'm BACK!!! Atmospheric entry in 30 seconds....
altitude 110 km
Speed close to 20,000 kph
Entry phase ... Let's all cross our fingers ^^ ...

Now for the pictures!
Like a dream, smooth as silk
Thanks Dan to have changed the topic name. YES, we've landed !!!!!
have started breathing again
Champagne and cigar are go.
cheers!
My first live touchdown - a very emotional moment and an amazing achievement by NASA
Brrrr!!!! So cold !!!! Welcome to Mars!
Yes !!!
Here's to the good people at NASA and everybody contributing to their enormous efforts.
Congrats guys !!
Good grief
I have a confession to make. I had no peanuts, so I was eating cheddar flavored potato chips.
did I hear someone say 40 or 14 degree tilt????
0.25 degree tilt?
Thanks to everyone who created simulations, feeds, etc. This was incredible fun.
Excellent! This was very exciting!
Hail Phoenix, "welcome on an other planet" .
* * * * 00.53.52: TOUCHDOWN * * * *
00.54.55: Phoenix radio off.
01.06: SOLAR ARRAYS OPEN
01.28: MRO data playback begins
01.30: Flight Operations post-landing poll.
01.30: Mars Express playback (43 mins)
02.43: FIRST IMAGES EXPECTED!
...........However its bed for me - tis late here but I'm so proud to have been present.
At my site we have 150% margin on peanuts...
P.S. Sorry - timings are for UK - got from Stu's blog - Biyee
Absolutely brilliant thanks to all for helping co-ordinate all the timings.
Watching the simulation at the same time as watching NASA tv was great and the music went well with the comentary.
Phew!
Well done to all. lots of fun to follow
Roy
that's right, 0.25 deg tilt
yes !!
0.25 degree tilt confirmed !!
awaiting solar array deploy
According to project manager Phoenix is almost exactly on azimuth orientation - EW
>0.25 degree tilt confirmed !!
That's flat. I wonder if we'll see any rocks at all.
TTT
What with the flatness and the I advise everyone to examine the first images of the footpads when they come down for some anomalous red footwear.
I think someone must have laid a concrete slab for Phoenix to Land on to get just 0.25 degrees of tilt. No chance of rocks under any of the feet!!!
Now all the excitement is over it’s the long quiet wait till those first images arrive. Its 1:30am here in the UK but there is no going to bed for this space cadet. I couldn’t think of going to bed before I get my first look at Green Valley. Got to see just how flat and featureless it really. God it’s nice to be down
Just wanna confirm - it is 6:43pm PDT that the first images are expected. I have a few friends coming over to check them out and I want to be sure I gave them the right time.
Same here Alex, no way I'm turning in until Ive seen those first pics...!
I believe Peter Smith was giving peanuts to the people in the control room if you were watching on Nasa TV during EDL.Its great to be on Mars again!
I've tried to switch sleeping hours and I 1/2 succeed
I've got to leave home in another 2h20 minutes to catch a plane and I'm sure the pictures will be down by then
They HAVE too. Mind Phoenix, we know where you are (I mean, at least Tim53 must know it )
Emily is transmitting an impromptu news conference on ustream
I was able to post a bit of what the experience at Kuiper Space Sciences was at my blog at http://tuvas21.blogspot.com , it was pretty boring really, but, well, yah... I was able to get more information from there then I was from web sources, although it was basically a play of NASA TV.
BTW, I do know at least one of the Tucson channels had live coverage, I just don't know which one...
The New York Times posted an http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/26/science/26mars.html?_r=1&ref=space&oref=slogin about the successful landing. I do not know if it has already been posted here.
Just saw a snipit of News about the Phoenix landing on Sky News. Don;t know if they carried it live
NOW you tell me...I'm personally not far from producing Snickers Bars for the next week...
Congratulations NASA and JPL! My whole family watched it on NASA TV. Fantastic! Got to go to see the first post-landing briefing now.
Pictures!
http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/images.php?gID=0&cID=7
Awesome, This is awesome. Mars, nasa, the internet. A great combination!
From Mars to my living room, wow.
Cool pictures
^
I know the feeling!
Utopia Planitia without the rocks...
Congrats to djellison for pegging the terrain, and most of all to the Phoenix team for getting us here. What would we do without you?
