Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Opportunity _ Iconic Images Of 2005

Posted by: Reckless Dec 30 2005, 11:39 PM

Hi everyone.
I just thought it might be nice to see a set of pictures which meant a lot to each of us. Either artistic, scientific or just one of those heart stopping moments in the MER
year.
I'm sure there could be many great photos to show from the likes of mr ETAL and others wink.gif laugh.gif
Here's the one that gets me every time.

Happy new year and a cool yule to all

Reckless

I have to agree with dot, that just made my jaw drop. Not just because of the huge dust devil but also because Spirit arrived at the summit just then.

Anyway here is another moment:

And this was of course also something special smile.gif

It has been a superb year for unmanned spaceflight !
smile.gif
Both MERs kept going on to explore Mars...
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was successfully send off to the red planet...
Venus Express is on its way...
Cassini-Huygens performed excellent...
Deep Impact was the best for me !

It's really going to be difficult to choose a 2005 unmannedspacelight.com image of the year, isn't it? It's been an amazingly succesfull year. I can't choose my favorite...there are so many. biggrin.gif cool.gif

I'd vote for all of the above, and maybe the one I haven't found, yet.

How about the one that made the cover of Aviation Week and APOD? That one was truly THE representative of the best unmannedspaceflight.com has to offer: great subject matter, dramatic view, and international cooperation!

I think the AVWST cover sums up what makes this place special in so many ways.... so it gets my vote for #1!

JPL just put up a http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/2005images/ (Requires Flash), and then there's http://planetary.org/news/2005/1231_The_Year_in_Pictures_2005.html nice feature as well, if you want more eye candy to choose from.

Your "Wind-sculpted sand and rocks" image was one of my favorites, also. But thanks especially for sharing a Kodak moment from the place of your birth. wink.gif
