Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Chit Chat _ Victorian Capes (not from Mars)

Posted by: vikingmars May 9 2010, 07:40 PM

Here in Upper-Normandy, close to the City of Etretat, you will find one of the highest cliffs and capes alongside both sides of the Channel, being between 70m and 110m high.
Why did I put « Victorian » in the title ? Not only because there are capes and bays that remind of Victoria crater on Mars, but also because it was during the Victorian times that this place was very fashion to go for vacations from Paris. Now in the beginning of the 21st century, we see more and more people going to Upper-Normandy, because the natural landscapes are still devoid from any construction and environmental problems.
Why ? Its mainly because of the dangerous, treatcherous and quick sea erosion coming from the sea with an average of 30cm per year advance inside the cliffs (and up to 1 meter/year in some places after big storms). Look at the great landslide at the foot of the cliff in the 1st picture and the series of landslides in the 2nd picture : they occurred last year ! The cliffs are white because they are made of chalk.
Lots of birds, no more found in the rest of Europe, are nesting there and the crabs there are enormous (and tasty !). smile.gif

The two "pillars" in the sea (hereabove) show where the cliffs were standing in 1750-1800... blink.gif

Magnificent photos! - Did you stitch them together? - What is your equipment?

Hi Olivier !

Stunning pans, beautiful country smile.gif

But, I will never change for "my" hills and calanques near Marseille tongue.gif

How's about the Cape Canaille, near Cassis. Taller than the Eiffel Tower, 400 m about.

Panoramic made by myself, at the summit of Carpiagne Hill in 2008.

Lovely photos guys - but that's 11 meg of attachments in a single thread, and nothing to do with UMSF.

Someone has to back this stuff up you know.

Beautiful! Oh, and too bad you weren't there at the time! You could have gotten a great time lapse sequence!

That doesn't back stuff up. That pays for a server. What it takes to back stuff up is TIME. Could you give the admin team (and it's a team, not a person) some of that?

UMSF is not a for-hire personal photograph storage site.

I'm sorry to say that, although the pictures are beautiful, this was not the place for them.

Phil
