Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Chit Chat _ how to visit JPL during June 21-24 window?

Posted by: ChrisC May 23 2011, 07:57 PM

Hello all -

I've been a lurker here for a few years ...

I will be in Los Angeles in late June. Last time I was there about 7-8 years ago, I drove over to JPL (unplanned, really) and discovered that it doesn't really have a visitors center like the other NASA facilities, and so was turned away at the gate. OK, I'll plan ahead next time smile.gif

So, this time I find that they do have visitors days, but they seem to be rather infrequent. The next one I see on the schedule is July 6th, when I sadly will not be there.

Am I reading the JPL website properly?

Is there a group tour happening during the June 21-24 window that I might tag along on, perhaps via donation to a charity of that groups' choice?

Call the public services office - explain your situation - http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/tours/views/index.cfm - they may well be able to tag you on to a group tour that's already booked.

There is a visitors center, but it's behind the security apart from Von Karman lecture series events.

Thanks for that info. I did give them a call, and they are already 25% overbooked on the June tours. There are June tour dates on the 20th and 27th (closest to my window) but well overbooked.

Oh well. (sniff)

I went back to JPL a couple years ago, and they have added a very small gift shop in the visitor's entrance building. You might be able to go there and get into the gift shop. It isn't much, but maybe the info office can tell you if its possible.
