Unmanned Spaceflight.com _ Image Processing Techniques _ Renaming/reordering Mariner 10 EDRs

Posted by: Astroboy Mar 11 2022, 09:07 PM

Hey all! It's been a while since I last posted, but I'm getting back into processing old spacecraft images. Now that I have access to a Windows PC I can do a lot more (and far more easily) than before.

I've been batch converting the Mariner 10 EDR tape dumps to PNG and quickly realized that the images are not in chronological order on the tapes, and I remembered that the FDS clock was reset a few times during the mission, which means multiple images have the same image number. Is there some way to batch rename the files to just include the time they were taken in UTC? When IMG2PNG does its job I see that it identifies metadata within the tape dump files - is there some way to extract this metadata? Please note that I'm still quite a novice and what knowledge I had is a bit rusty.

Eventually I'd like to be able to do some more advanced processing, but for now I'd just like to be able to put the images in order for the purposes of time lapses and whatnot.

EDIT: Nevermind, figured this out with a batch script.

So how do you extract this metadata from the Mariner 10 IMGs?
