QUOTE (climber @ Feb 19 2021, 06:26 AM) *
Jennifer made it clear that they want to « get rid of » the copter ASAP because it limits the use of some instruments. She said twice that they’ll look for the best place around and drive to it. At least my understanding during the conference...

Also limits auto-nav driving as the cover protecting the copter reduces the ground clearance.

They keep saying "meters" to target. Is the target the landing spot they would like below the cliffs ?

I saw that exchange too, I think what what is meant is the map is 120 football fields wide, but the TRN will land on the nearest safe spot, unless the entry is way off they won't be diverting 120 football fields or even 700 meters.

I know MRO will be able to act as a relay for Perseverance during landing. Will Mars Odyssey or MAVEN be available as well?

I think TGO is recording during the landing, later other orbiters are making passes, there are 5 orbiters that can relay rover data.

Can someone give any more detailed insight on how exactly does the TRN work ? Are they aiming for a safe spot at the center of the landing ellipse, or any safe spot ?

Next up is the Mars/Uranus conjunction on 21 Jan 2021. That will be be harder to see as Uranus is so much dimmer.

QUOTE (fredk @ Dec 23 2020, 07:58 PM) *
It finally cleared in Vancouver Tuesday evening. I'm surprized there was some discussion about whether they'd be resolvable by eye - at 10'.5 they were easy to pick apart (even with my not-so-great eyesight) and I'm sure I could've at the minimum 6'. I guess viewing against a brightish sky helped and maybe Saturn could get lost in Jupiter's glare against a black sky?

In reality they did not get as close together as the general media had us believe. They were always resolvable to my spectacle corrected vision.

Here is a pic I took quite early on the 21st. 45x zoom using a 60mm spotting scope and pic snapped by IPhone 10. I seem to have caught Saturn in a very stable pocket of atmosphere. The view was much better with the naked eye, esp after the evening got darker.

QUOTE (JRehling @ Jul 20 2020, 02:07 AM) *
This is my pic from early morning a few days ago with a William Optics Star 71 refractor and ZWO ASI 1600mm camera. It was easily visible at 4:45am. I have yet to see it in the evening sky with the naked eye, with the SF fog being particularly uncooperative. I got some closeups of the coma with my Celestron 9.25" which have quite a different look to them.

This is my first naked-eye comet since 2008 and sixth overall.

Nice capture JRehling.
