That was made from Earth observations, not the HAMO observations, so it's in the wrong topic ?

I know they are no plans to climb the mountain,

I am pretty sure someone from the team said the long term goal ( 10 years + ) was to climb to the top of the mountain, if it's possible and the rover survives long enough.

NH has been talking to the DSN for a couple of hours now, so perhaps the (still historic!) image downlink has started. smile.gif

http://eyes.nasa.gov/dsn/dsn.html

(I haven't read anything about when exactly the image downlink is supposed to start - not that it should matter much for us in terms of release time, anyway)

It starts today, images will be posted each Friday.

You can see the clearly on the images the North Pole in constant daylight, pretty neat.

Correct me if I am wrong, but non of the images from NH are the full non compressed images, including the approach images, they are going to be downloaded later, correct ?

One question elakdawalla asked but was not addressed at the press conference was something I'd wondered myself - assuming Charon was formed by a giant impact, might that impact have taken place more recently than the formation of the Solar System? This could have provided a more recent heat source for both Pluto and Charon, though the timescale of tidal locking and orbit circularization doubtless sets a lower bound on the age of the current Pluto system.

They did address the question, the answer was they need more images to be able to do a crater count, to help address the question.

People have been focused on the NH flyby.
The picture on the Rosetta site of her is misleading, it looks nothing like what she did when she gave a Rosetta presentation.
May she rest in peace.

Do you have any idea why the fuel usage is a concern? Is there any possibility of additional targets after the second encounter?

-kap

They want to operate the spacecraft for years and years after the KBO encounter, you need thruster fuel to do that, so that is why thruster fuel is always a concern.

DSN Madrid doesn't appear to be to be receiving any data from NH now (http://eyes.nasa.gov/dsn/dsn.html), so I'm guessing there wasn't any scientific data tucked in right behind the systems/telemetry data (the transmission was way to short to be anything but a status update). Does anyone know when some of the science data was sent?

-kap

Some pics are coming down tomorrow June 15th. NH is still collecting data. The phone home was to let everyone know the close flyby worked.

I have no idea if the data includes the amount of occupied memory.

She said the phone home signal will indicate which sequences ran ok, whether there had been any computer resets and the amount of the recorder used.

It's actually been known for decades Pluto was reddish. Also a color picture has already been released.

Things are happening fast now. As mentioned in a previous briefing, we may not see all the data for awhile. But I'm sure they will put out some images and data this week.

I "accidentally" took a screen grab from a monitor during a live feed from NH Mission Operations today:

[attachment=36809:NH_Monitor.jpg]

It sure doesn't look like telemetry data. Although it's too small to be useful, if it is an image of Pluto or Charon, it could be a teaser of the kind of resolution and detail we can soon expect. Personally, I think it could be a close up on Pluto...

I thought it was the NASA TV feed, they were watching themselves on NASA TV, for a few mins.

I'm hoping that the light heart-shaped area on Pluto does not turn out to be a big snowfield or dunefield-- that might make for a b o r i n g primary target area.

From the flyby simulation high res picks of the heart area's interface with the other terrain will in itself be scientifically interesting, let alone anything else.

....The data from the Eyes app may be not up to date (seeing they dont seem to have an accurate Pluto terrain map.

Eyes has been updated, if you watch the flyby preview, Pluto shows an earlier image. They can't really be expected to update it almost 2 times per day now, as more and more observations are taken.

A video made simulating Voyager's approach to Triton which may be useful in guessing when various features are distinguishable from artifacts.

That's a pretty cool movie. When I watch those kinds of movies I always think the spacecraft is going to actually hit the object it's approaching.

So not quite the last chance for us to experience encountering strange new worlds.

They have two targets, one is bit smaller than the other, the smaller one is a bit further away, so they have to make the choice of which one to go to.
