Tau measurements maybe ?

I agree, three landings would give them the chance to use earthquakes & impacts to probe the interior of Mars in the same way Apollo allowed us to determine what was underneath the surface of the Moon.

As to the suggestion that they fit something like the weather mast used on Phoenix, they'd also need a camera to monitor it.

New techniques don't require 3 landers, they can do the science with one, thats why they have been given the go ahead for the mission.

Forget pretty pics, the science is literally underground.

They are taking a Phoenix weather package with them I believe, including that telltale that was sich a cute feature of that mission.

P

You sure about that, no mention of that on the website.

For me the killer phrase is "Tango Delta nominal", after having it explained by Steltzner. Pilots should use that one more!

And what about the gasp the person makes after TD is declared, you could just sense the relief of years of tension, and some small disbelief it all worked, awesome.

The sun is in the south a lot, so they have to be super careful not to point at the sun with the normal filters. Also they seemed to indicate they wern't sure of the exposures needed. I am am sure Mike Malin will sort it all out.

My impression was they gave the task to "scientists" who at that point did not have much to do.............
As for inconsistancy, thats why you have a Chief Project Scientist, he has the final say.....

Did Oppy break the rock in the background ? If so they must be dry and brittle.

I know this is well past the event, but I haven't been able to identify the meaning of "constant velocity accordion".

Any clues?!

Dean

This link explains it. Basically it the short period where the DS figures out the actual height left to descend and gets to the real 50 m above the surface point with a deceleration of 20 m/s. Then it starts the next phase.

Accordion

""You can think of it as a rocket-powered helicopter that will hover and then lower MSL to the surface on a harness called a bridle," says Doug McCuistion.

"It lands on its wheels and as soon as it puts its mast up, it's ready to go."

Well not exactly true, lol. wink.gif

...reason for late loading of the RTG.

I can think of a few reasons too, security, safety, I read there were three independant cooling systems keeping the MMRTG cool inside the areoshell on the ground.

Cape York seems somehow... diminished. The flashiness of Gale has spoilt me for other parts of Mars! tongue.gif

One of the reasons Gale was choosen, and I am sure it was a pretty low down on the list reason...., was the shear spectacular scenery Joe Public could get excited about at Gale.

Still Endeavour is nice and when we climb up a bit it will get better.

Hopefully the REMS will run as normal, especially if the R10 installation is successful. Remember after landing the surface obs were preset and pretty limited.

Um wasnt part of the landing ellipse in that dune field, right there? Given how rough that terrain looks I think it would have been in trouble had it landed over there!

All of the landing eclipse was within the performance of the Skycrane, except the very small accepted risk spots, that could have killed the mission.

It is 90 minutes long, but the first 15 min & the last 15 minutes have a static graphic and NO sound!
Jack

The version I watched had sound all the way through, and was just over an hour long. They guy did say there was no way the rover could drive to the top of the mound. Maybe Paolo has a different view on that ?

Would these robot-made craters be safe to approach and have scientific value for MSL's instruments?

They said they would, tungsten is pretty inert. The impacts are quite far away though, and not in the direction they want to head.

I was looking at a anaglyph and some dunes seems to literally drape over a small cliff. Does anyone know what the vertical exaggeration is on the HiRise anaglyphs ?
