I think the success of EDL for Curiosity shouild increase confidence that the substantial funding that may be needed for advanced Mars exploration will not be wasted by mission failures.

The money is not really wasted, and your always going to have some failures.

You should listen to this clip now before it's gone.

TTT

A good audio clip indeed, I was wondering what exactly Adam was doing, and just how exactly how they knew the rover was safe, before the thumb nails came down of course. I still can't really believe it worked and we are all so lucky to have Curiosity safely landed and in one piece, on Mars.

I seem to remember there was some concern that Opportunity's camera optics got contaminated during its visit to the heatshield, so they might be more careful with Curiosity.

John

Remember MSL's heat shield had a suit of senors built in to measure temperatures, g forces and how much material ablated away, so they will know how well it performed anyway.

Yes, there's something to be said for a complicated EDL with lots of 'space junk'; it sure makes the slow early days of landing go by faster.
The question of visiting any of these things up-close, even the non-hazardous debris, is still really far off though, we should keep in mind.

A Mission manager said none will be visited, mainly as they were not decontaminated from earth organics as the rover was, so they don't want any chance of a erroneous organic result due to something transported from Earth.

Since the parachute landed generally south of the line of the other impactors, we can safely assume that the wind was from north to south, which might support that hypothesis of a drifting cloud of dust. But of course, the parachute was drifting with the winds above the ground. We don't know for certain that the wind at the surface was also from north to south.

David

Don't forget the DS does a rather large avoidance maneuver to prevent the back shell/parachute from impacting the DS as it slows down.

... But there certainly may be other interesting targets that could've been to our north.

The pointing direction of the landed rover was chosen as part of the EDL, with the front hazcams pointing at the mound. The DS could only fly away in one of two directions, so as to minimize plume impact on the rover, one was southerly, the other northerly.

I was watching whilst the family slept, and I thought she landed a lot quicker than in the simulations, kind of took me by surprise. I think I thought the sky crane hover would take longer, or something. unsure.gif
By my reckoning from powered flight to declared touchdown was only 1 min 14 sec. On reflection a preview video was about the same, but on the night it seemed real quick !

I ask because if was to keep running until it ran out of fuel and it had 140kg left..

The DM was programmed to burn for 6 seconds, then cut off on the flyaway burn.

I think they said 140 kg of fuel were left over. Assuming the decent stage tanks are intact, now there is a gas station on mars for future explorers! smile.gif

Surely they would have burst open on impact ?

.....
Was there ample left over or lower than expected levels?

There was a lot more left than expected. They had kept asking for more and more during design to make sure they had plenty of reserve, in the end they used way less than expected. It seemed to descend from 3000 m to 500 m really quickly, then in no time at all was on the ground. But in the scheme of things that was far far better than running out of fuel 100 m up......... blink.gif
Post flight analysis will no doubt explain why they used the fuel they did, and should help in future use of the DS.

Yeah, that's what it seems like in the front Hazcams, but one of the press specifically asked the question during the presser and the engineer on the panel (can't recall the name) said all the wheels were oriented in the same direction.

Jennifer said the wheels are all aligned in the same direction, I believe she was mistaken in that small detail. She possibly had not really taken in the image the reporter was referring to and slightly misunderstood the question.

I think Mr. Malin stated the exact coordinates "to within a meter." Did anyone catch that?

Yes he said that, so they know exactly where the rover is. He also said they can map it's position to with cm using the full res MARDI pictures.

The less parts moved around during EDl would be sensible.

MSL on the other hand already looks like it's been on Mars for a while. It's got dusty lenses and dirty wheels with pebbles rolling around inside.

MER's were inside airbags, MSL was under a jet plume.

MSL jettisoned a significant amount of tungsten ballast. The total mass of that ballast was greater than the mass of the MER rover. Most of the ballast would have impacted on the Martian surface.

I was referring to the cruise stage.

I think most of it did, I believe a few denser parts of it may have survived, but not much.
