16 miles is a bit close isn't it ? You'd feel pretty stupid if a navigation error resulted in a collision.........

QUOTE (kwan3217 @ Aug 6 2008, 05:42 PM) *
Who is speaking during the EDL commentary? Early through there is one american-sounding guy, then later most of the announcements are by a french-sounding guy. What are their names?

Google is your friend.

""Phoenix has landed! Phoenix has landed! Welcome to the northern plains of Mars!" mission commentator Richard Kornfeld exclaimed from the control center at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "

I still marvel at the fact it worked, the shear number of things that had to go right in order to land perfectly.
I'd love to see the software flow charts on the EDL sequence.

If they launched tomorrow the likely hood is something else would fail........

It took NASA dozens and dozens of launches to get it mostly right, and of course stuff still occasionally "blows up ".

The boiling cauldron does not relate to what conditions are now, but what might have been in the past when and if Mars was warmer, and deep down underground, like next to a hot volcano.......

I just noticed on this picture the excess cabling that had to be tied back.
1. You'd think it was a weight penalty.
2. All the extra extra bends could be a fail point.

Cableing on the scoop.

Oh I just realized that's the scoop in the testbed, the flight model might be neater.
