My take is they can't get an icy sample into the oven, despite their best efforts . It makes sense to go ahead with a "dry" sample as the clock is ticking. Also the spacecraft could at anytime fail, and that would be the end of the mission.

Of course, they probably know Phoenix will last for 200 days, so no hurry to try achieve full mission success.

Can you work for 90 long days straight without a break without making a big mistake?

Although Lowell thought he saw "man"-made canals. As for seeing evidence of water channels generally on this very dry world, Lowell has plenty of modern company. In fact, the word "water" almost seems to inhabit every other sentence in the history of Mars scientific inquiry and ruminations, relative lack of said substance notwithstanding.

There are billions of tonnes of water on Mars. It's mostly frozen though..........

Spirit and Opportunity should have brought a feather duster.

A 2 million dollar duster, so we cut the mini-tes out ?
Mer was designed to last 90 sols, thought the engineers knew better but kept it quiet......

Stuff happens.....on the positive side the ovens can still be used with only a few mm of openings. Also they are confident the Lander will operate till November, so we get 60 extra days of science smile.gif.

When I was looking at the Hi-Rise of the Phoenix Lander on the surface I can see channels that look like small river channels. Did anyone else notice this ?

Channels ?

Surprising amount of interest has been shown here for imaging 'snow' drifts in the Martian boreal realm.

Perhaps a future mission someday might be designed with an extra battery...

That's like sending half of another lander to Mars, there will be extra weight, complexity, and of course cost involved. They could could not even afford to double the flash memory, let alone carry a heavy extra long life battery.

Nice, I was just looking at the pictures.

I noticed they dumped a scoop full at the far end of the trench rather than somewhere else, any one have any thoughts on why ?

Peter said he'd going to " lay waste " to the National Park, that made me smile. Peter was grinning and smiling when he said that too. He wants to see the ice, lots of it too.......
