Does anybody with a subscription to Sky and Telescope know if the recovery of the Zeta ring was reported in any of the issues published late 2022 / early 2023? |

John, That's a good suggestion and a prudent course of action. I'll report back here when I get a reply. Thanks! |

Thanks, John. However, I'm using this image as an example of an EDR file that doesn't open correctly. Of course, there are myriad images that don't have corresponding IMG or IMQ versions (such as the content of this directory: https://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/Missions/Voya...R_1241/MBMQTV/). These are the EDR products I'm really interested in. |

Made some headway with this Voyager 1 image (labeled 1745S1-034 in the EDR file), but could well be a corrupted frame: CODE run("Raw...", "open=[053380.003] image=[16-bit Unsigned] width=1600 height=330"); 053380.003 Bizarrely, it doesn't seem to correspond with 1745S1-034 archived at the PDS: https://opus.pds-rings.seti.org/opus/#/view...ss-1-s-c3395301 {Edit: it IS the same file; the overlapping framelets made it seem Titan was near the right ansa, which it isn't.} |

I've been trying to open some of the EDR files from Voyager 2, circa 1985, from the period before the Uranus flyby, and all I'm getting are garbled frames (see example below). I'm using the ImageJ RAW import facility, setting the frame size to 1200 x 801, which works for most EDR images——just not for a significant fraction of the archived data from both Voyagers prior to this point. This is the main folder of images I'm trying to access: https://pdsimage2.wr.usgs.gov/Missions/Voya.../qedr/VGR_1241/ Hopefully, someone here will have better luck getting these to display correctly! |

Over 24 hours, on August 31st, 1989, Voyager 2 collected 182 narrow-angle clear-filtered frames. Together they create this view of Neptune, the Adams and Le Verrier rings, and some background stars. The planet's shadow cuts across the Le Verrier ring at top center. Edit: replaced with superior version. |

So how do you extract this metadata from the Mariner 10 IMGs? |

https://vimeo.com/665079286 Over the course of 43 hours, in June 1981, the Voyager 2 spacecraft captured over 530 monochrome frames of Saturn with its narrow-angle camera. Aligned and colorized using subsequent Voyager data, these frames reveal cloud features, ring spokes, and eight of the gas giant's attendant moons, ranging from massive Titan to diminutive Epimetheus. The sequence has been looped multiple times here, sometimes with additive frames to reveal the moons' orbital paths. (Note the relatively high inclination of Mimas's orbit compared to the other satellites.) This sequence was produced using calibrated data sourced from OPUS (https://opus.pds-rings.seti.org). ______________________ Credit: NASA/JPL/Caltech/Ian Regan |

We can also confirm that Pioneer 11 was the first spaceprobe to image Epimetheus, with photo F-12E taken 00:29 hrs, 1979-SEP-01. The F-ring and Tethys are also visible: The Saturn Viewer produces a plot of the same situation albeit as seen from Earth; here, the view is from beneath the ring plane (Pioneer was above it). Adding to the confusion is Dione, which is somewhat in the foreground and out of Pioneer's field-of-view in the image above. But the issue is seemingly settled: 1979 S1 was indeed Epimetheus: |

Using Mark Showalter's superlative Saturn Viewer, we can now see that Dollfus did indeed discover Janus with the image I posted earlier: |

Funnily enough, I remember an article of his in an issue of Astronomy Now, back in 1989, called: "Neglected Nereid". |
