This is a contemporary-produced version of the movie that Bjorn's working on — notice the massive difference in quality, thanks to modern processing techniques and software (not to mention Bjorn's knack of eking out every smidgen of detail from this recalcitrant dataset):

A NASA film called "Project Voyager" can also be found on the FootageVault website:

http://www.footagevault.com/clip/FTV-0006211
http://www.footagevault.com/clip/FTV-0006212

Of interest is the primitive animation of a "possible" encounter with Uranus, where the rings are noticeably absent, given that they had yet to be discovered at the time this documentary was produced!

This seems like an appropriate thread to post this in — here are several archive clips showing the Voyager spacecraft in various stages of construction:

Here's another GRS-centred time-lapse movie of Jupiter -- this time taken by Voyager 2:

Of minor interest, I'm sure, is a video of the Helene flyby I put together ages ago, quickly forgot about and then rediscovered only recently:

Fantastic work, Bjorn! cool.gif

As someone who has also dabbled with these images of late, I can appreciate the level of care you have taken assembling this sequence. For comparison, see a much more rudimentary version of the same movie that I put together a couple of months ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVMc5PTChwE

Voyager 1 actually took five sets of these 10-hour movies; each offset from another by 72 degrees of longitude.

I notice that the best narrow-angle shot of Helene from the March flyby has been released:

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA12723

I've rotated the TIFF, so that north is up, and generated an enhanced version that highlights the small-scale surface features:

Whoops- thanks for fixing the link! wink.gif

I should also mention that if you want an example of "before modern processing", then you may want to use this archive video instead:

Here's an excerpt from the most up-to-date iteration of my version of the same approach movie:

Emily,

Here's an old one I cobbled together from various sources, and then uploaded to the (often forgotten) Google Video site:

Voyager 1 Flyby of Jupiter in 1979
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-870102537039645219#

If that's not really good enough for your purposes, then please feel free to use any of the other videos I posted earlier!

Mine arrived on Friday! Haven't had chance to thoroughly peruse it yet, but the pages I have sampled so far are excellent.

It must be rewarding to see your 'baby' finally out and about in the public domain, Paul -- very well done!

These versions are only 'early drafts', mind you - the final movie should (hopefully) consist of stills that look similar to these:

QUOTE (Bjorn Jonsson @ Sep 13 2010, 01:15 AM) *
I'm working on a Voyager 1 atmospheric movie by the way.

I'm also fiddling with some of the Voyager 1 movie data, Bjorn -- it goes without saying that I'm sure your work will be superior to mine, but here's what I've done so far, in any case:

Jupiter Voyager 1 Approach Movie - Green Filter Only:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jBir5hix6g

Jupiter Voyager 1 Approach Movie - Color / Rotated:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZrJ0D8IfB8

Jupiter Voyager 1 Atmospheric Features Movie - Color:

I really am a glutton for punishment - at various points during this process, I have resisted the urge to put my fist through the monitor, and throw the tower out of the window! rolleyes.gif

Back in 2002, we had a serious cat problem in the street where I live -- here in Plymouth, Devon. The people who lived in a house on my block had moved out suddenly, leaving behind several un-sterilised cats, which began breeding with other stray cats in the area. My family, with the blessing of the RSPCA, caught as many of these stray cats as possible, using a special trap that they loaned out to us.

One of the cats that we caught was a tiny little female whom I named Cleopatra. We decided to keep her, and ever since then I have nursed her back to health and won her trust and confidence; she was the dearest, most affectionate and sweet-hearted cat you could ever hope to meet.

On Friday, she died suddenly of a heart attack, caused by a clot on the lungs, according to the vet. I miss her terribly and have shed many tears since.

I don't really know what else to say. Sweet dreams Cleo.

Chris Go has some amazing pictures showing the still-absent SEB, in addition to the GRS exhibiting a richer and darker colour than usual:

Here's another Voyager 2 narrow angle view, taken on 28th of June, 1979:

Attached Image

A day later, this officially released composite was captured, and provides a useful comparison of how the different processing techniques affect the final result:

Now, this certainly would be a mammoth undertaking, but just imagine what a cleaned-up and properly processed version of this movie would look like:

Here's another view from Voyager 2, taken on May 28th, 1979:

Attached Image

I've used a rudimentary 'recipe' to reach this result, using the three filtered images: Orange, Green and Violet:

CODE
ORANGE == Add Violet, Dodge 4%
GREEN == Add Violet, 48%
VIOLET == Add Orange, Negative, Burn 14%

Grey World Color Balance
Curves adjustment

As so often happens, Bjorn and Gordan, your work has yet again inspired me to crack out Paint Shop Pro and have a fiddle with some of the raw data.

Here's a relatively un-scientifically adjusted view of the GRS, taken by Voyager 2 (30th June 1979):

I don't know if anyone's noticed, but Amazon now have a "Look Inside!" preview of Paul's atlas:

I'm just hearing about this now... terrible, terrible news. The first thing it reminded me of was the awful Dunblane tragedy. I remember listening to the events of that day unfolding over the radio, very vividly indeed.
