I had not noticed the cobble had been moved. One of the placements must have pressed too much on the cobble. BTW, the cobble was NOT RAT-brushed. MB (1 placement), MI, APXS (2 placements) only. Paolo Thanks for the info. I have removed the reference to the brush from the Santorini images. |

I can't decide whether Santorini has actually been brushed or not. The putative circular edge of the brushed area is also the fractured edge of the reflective face of the rock (according to Stu's anaglyph). Phil, did we see this degree of reflectivity in the earlier basalts? I can't find any front hazcam images of the RAT positioned on Santorini. However, there does appear to be a difference in the brightness of the top between 1713 and 1747. ![]() Perhaps the difference is due to the sun reflecting off the MI instrument box onto the top of the cobble. Here is a colorized version of the MI pan: ![]() Hmmm... |

Er, thanks Peter59 for linking to my Santorini MI images. Unfortunately, one of my image note links was wrong and led to a focus zoom animation rather than to the MI pan. I have corrected the link and you may follow it to this pan: ![]() I wondered why there were 136 "looks" for one pan and only 20 for the other - but 66 for the MI focus zoom... A 15 image MI sequence has been uploaded for sol 1751 ( tomorrow sol ( for target Andros(?))) in the target area Crete |

Very nice poem, Stuart. I think the role of a poet is to connect the dots and create a "true" metaview of being. There are a lot of very good dot creators here, but not many dot connectors. You, sir, are a very good dot connector. Stuart, this will not be your last Phoenix poem. The "true" meaning of life comes after death. Perhaps a poem about bright eyed children staring at Phoenix in the Prehisory wing of a Martian museum? One of my knee weakening epiphonies occurred holding a Cambrian worm cast in my hand while fossil hunting with my children and realizing this that very trail could have been made by one of my direct ancestors -- and that my own trail in the mud leading to an unimaginable future was now made. Think about that for a moment. |

Very clever Fran. It will be interesting to use the Radiometrically Calibrated images to do this exercise when they are available. |

Er, thanks peter59 for the kudos. I have sort'a specialized in the Phoenix OMs, trying to squeeze out every last byte of information. Here are the 209 OM images that I have produced to date. Remember, the colors are useful only for inter-image comparison and must not be treated as "real". I have tried to add image tags that may be helpful in searching the images, but there is one important set of tags and links missing: sample location. I have requested assistance in tagging the OM images from "the other forum" but no one has yet offered to help. Does anyone know of a document that states exactly where specific OM samples were taken? The mission summary pages on the Phoenix home site doesn't exactly tie sampling location to specific sample cells. |

Sol 98 cloud movie LB ( Uv ) and RB ( green ) frames were registered and used to create a synthetic color image. No attempt has been made to white balance the images. |

Here is my take on the sol 21 to 44 changes to the ice under the lander. The images were registered with a double affine registration ( effectively six point registration ) and then brightness matched, so I think you can believe any changes you see -- including shape changes to the ice mass. The sol 21 image was the one transformed, so it has a slight loss in sharpness. |

Here is the sol 8-31 animation under the lander with exposures for sunlight. I expect UA / JPL / NASA to show their properly calibrated RAD version "soon" demonstrating changes to the surface of the ice in direct sunlight. |

( briefly dropping out of lurking mode...) As much as I hate to do so, I have to agree with silylene: the case for water-ice -- at least in the Goldilocks trench -- is "not proven". Here is a sol 20-24 3D animation of the shadowed area in the trench. I created it to see if I could see how much of the clumps remained after the "sublimation". Unfortunately even the NASA gif image drops out in the darkest part of the shadow -- where the most interesting clumps were. But if you look closely at the bright clumps that fade nearest the shadow edges I think you can see that the clumps do not completely disappear. Even in the darkest shadow there appears to be "something" where the white clumps were -- so, yes, there may have been a dramatic change in the white clumps -- but perhaps no more so than the reductiion in the brightness parts of the top of the trench. Yeah, I believe that it's water-ice but it's not yet scientifically proven. I am still puzzled why the infrared spectrum from the left SSI camera has not been cited as supporting evidence for water-ice. ( jumping back into cyber-space...) |
