sol 1387 L456/R1234567:

with link to 1398 Navcam view.

It is not unreasonable to infer that the dark areas in the Navcam view is similar to the dark areas in the pancam view.

Er, what's with that dark circular patch at the base of the red color chip? There is a hint of a similar dark circle below the green chip too.

Note also that the dust on the sundial and magnet appears to be the fine "red" dust from the storm. The dark dust -- especially the really dark dust near the color chips -- is what and from where?

Only if we can get the new version of the Rover model you are using.
Is this another of Doug's creations or something new.
I recall that the last one was posted somewhere on UMSF.
Could we pleeeease have the latest version? rolleyes.gif Pleeeeease.

I created the rover image using this Interactive 3D Rover model by eyeballing the orientation I wanted, did a print screen, pasted the image to Paint, saved and then loaded it into imagej, converted to B&W, did a polygonal select, copied, positioned and pasted the selected image to the base image.

It would be nice if the interface had a numerical input option to select lens, distance and orientation. Then a "real" 3D SFX image could be created.

And, yes, the best way to maneuver Spirit is sideways, but what would be the best orientation for maximum sunlight? My guess shows the mast shadow fall mostly on the front of the vehicle.

SFX of Spirit at WH3:

with link to sol 766 RAD panorama.

This is my best guess. Spirit will back down the slope? Maybe stop a little higher up the slope to get more tilt?

I'm sure the SFX gurus ( guruae?) can create a better image, but I thought I would try -- since, as Tesheiner pointed out, there was no movement tosol.

Perhaps the north facing slopes in this little western cove are steep enough for a winter's stay?

I am suggesting that the sol 1346 image may be frost:

The 1347 image was taken at 14:42 when the sun was at 51 degrees. I made the simplifying assumptions that Cabo Frio was due south and that the sun was due west, so anything on a slope greater than 49 degrees would be in shadow.

I didn't actually measure the slopes but I asked asked Buzz and he thought the slopes were greater than that.

It is possible that the bright areas are just weird sidelighting.

Anyway, thought it would would be interesting to post the speculation.

I'm always looking for new ways to combine the MER images.

This one has the brightness channel of a synthetic color L2/L6 image replaced with the sharpened average of 16 "super resolution" frames after a 2X scaling and translation allignment.

Useful to the rock guys?

Thought some might be interested in a color version of the superres pan.

And here is a "work in progress" sol 1337 L257 pan looking down at "Smith" ( I think):

I have just about given up on Oppy panoramas. Does anyone know what happened to the "plan" to release the "RAW" JPGs with a dust correction?

Bravo!

Er, could you share your flat-field dust masks? I have "hit the wall" trying to use the pancam sky-flat images to correct for the dust. I have been using the L1 filter to correct the image after RGB conversion.

Here is my final attempt at the north view:

I haven't done one of these in a while -- but thought I would try my hand again while Tesheiner is travelling.

If it is correct ( I have bene known to be wrong about these things ), it looks like Spirit is headed for an exit ramp -- but was facing the "wrong way" in the last rear hazcam view?

Lots of synthesized missing data. I applied a variation of the Ant103 dust mask as a division by the inverted mask plus an offset.

I am ready to give up developing a simple "ACME dust correction" (beep, beep.)

Please, please JPL, apply the dust correction before creating the "raw" JPG images!

Hot diggity! And what are the little red blotches? Chili peppers? Paprika? cool.gif

Er, the red spots are most likely imaging artifacts caused by interpolation and registration of a tiny piece of a pancam image with a MI panorama.

But there is a small quantum mechanical like probability that it is chili pepper flakes -- freeze dried.

The image colors are only a hint of what might be.

Without at least a 1/3 overlap I don't think a dust compensation flat field mask will work on the 8 bit JPG data.

I hope that the Cornell Pancam Images will have a dust correction.

Spirit - Opportunity MI lens comparison animation:

The fuzziness of Oppy's miniTES mirror reflection may be mostly from the dust on the MI lens.

In general, all of Oppy's optics appear dustier than Spirit's -- so it would not be a surprise Oppy's mini-TES optics are dusty too.

Here is a comparison animation of the IDDs. Although lighting differences account for some of the differences, most seem to be directly dust related.

Spirit / Oppy miniTES mirror comparison:

Although the mirror seems to be working -- the reflection from Oppy's mirror seems less distinct --
so there may be "only" a dust problem and not a mechanical one.

If you look at the two sequences side by side -- and if the glare is ignored --
they are similar.

Not sure if anyone is interested in this, but thought I would share...

The pancam images have been processed by using the L2 L7 SkyFlat images as masks to compensate for the lens dust. Also, a square root filter was applied to the images after dusty lens processing.

There are links from the panorama to individual 3D images.
