QUOTE (Stu @ Jul 8 2007, 08:45 AM) *
Giving another talk later this week and would appreciate advice on this pic I've made for it...

Sky too blue? Not blue enough? Not going for 1000% scientific accuracy this time, just wanting to try and put across the beauty of Mars...

Stu, I would make the sky bluer around the sun. It is, after all, a Martian sunset.

I noticed that the sundial shadows are most distinct in the L6 image when the base image was taken - which means the direct light was bluer than the indirect light.

Ah, indeed:

The right frame is 98 seconds after the left -- which seems to be clearer -- but still dusty.

SO, a dust devil was moving right to left?

17 frame 1/2 size sol 1149 dust devil animation here.

It looks like it came very close to Spirit. Notice the traveling "shadow"(?) and the darkening at the end.

The differences were stretched 32X

Not sure where to post this Oppy sol 1065 sunset...

Lots of color compression artifacts plus a few missing data fixups.

Montage of the images here:

This is three of the 9 L4/R1 pairs shot just before sunrise on sol 1063.

I tried a number of processing tricks, but didn't see a hint of McNaught. Looks like the 12 bit data will be required -- if in fact the 2665 observation was an attempt to image the comet.

Both mossbauers are working fine... the shortish half-life isotope sources are getting decidedly "tired", but that doesn't degrade data quality, you just have to integrate on-target several times longer than on Sol 1 to get the same signal-to-noise level.

The cobalt-57 in the Mossbauer has a half-life of 270.9 days, so after 3 (Earth) years it takes almost 16 times longer to get the same result as sol 1!

The Curium-244 in the APXS has a half-life of about 18 years, so it only takes about 12% longer than sol 1.

They were expected to be imaged on sol 1048 but there are no data downlinked for that sol. Might be on the queue or perhaps aborted.

Mafra and Peixe 3D links now added to the Map.

Er, does anyone find it interesting that target Peixe is named after a river?

Indeed. Here is a polar projection including the location of all those cobbles, except for two of them supposely imaged on sol 1048 but not yet downlinked so I couldn't locate them.

Tesheiner, with your permission, I would like to use this map as a base to link to the 3D color images.

We should have images at 13 wavelengths. Do they match?

Er, the sol 1060 sequence is a super resolution sequence of this rock:

An earlier super resolution of the same rock was taken on sol 1002:

And the McMurdo pan image of sol 904:

There appears to be some interest in this rock. Why not just crawl over to it?

The 1027 drive direction pancams are pointed due east, so I don't think we are going to approach the end of Bottomless bay but head straight around to the far side to image the cliffs on the SW side. As far as I know the next cape (B1) has no name other than "Bottomless Bay NE"

James

Yep. That's what happened. Preliminary map here.

er, where did you see the 1027 drive direction pancams?

The pancams posted on exploratorium Dec 14 were the drive direction pancams from sol 1021 ( Dec 8 ) . I think they were sent after the 1027 drive because they were assigned a high priority before the Odyssey "glitch".
