For what it's worth, my triangulations agree exactly with your 1021 location. Parallax distances and angular separations using 8 features are consistant to within a few meters of the position. |

James, U da' MAN! I no longer bother to create pancam panoramas because I know that yours will be so much better. |

Perhaps Hawking rock is really sparrow rock? And what was the air speed of this fully laden rock? The real question is the clarification question: African or European? |

Sol 916 position based on Hawking rock: ![]() This map is based on algorimancer's long base parallax location of Hawking rock, it's current range ( 93.3 +/- 4 meters ) and heading relative to the right rim of Episilon crater ( 20.7 degrees). It puts Oppy about 30 meters east of the "official" map. The lines on the larger map are headings to the brighest rim spots ( 6.0 and 25.9 degrees) relative to the right rim of Episilon. Hmmm. |

estimated sol 909 position: ![]() This is based on the sol 908 Navcam image measurment of 32 +/- 2 meters to the south rim of Beagle less the apparent 5 meter movement north on sol 909 -- and a sol 909 Navcam measurment of 16.6 +/- 0.5 meters to a rock on the edge of Beagle Highway outcrop to the west. The north movement was a surprise. I measured a sol 908 navcam southward rock distance of 13.7 +/- 0.4 and a sol 909 pancam distance of 18.8 +/- 0.2. I am mystified by this movement. |

Er, I just remembered the funny little movement on sol 904. The movement occurred just before the right side of the pan was done -- so there may be a major problem in stitching this panorama using autostitch. I will try PTAssembler and see what it looks like. |

A comparison with the previous Navcam images indicate a rotation of about 4 degrees -- and a movement of about 30 cm north. I suspect some sort of IDD "unstow" failure. |

Ah, good. It concerned me that the current completed 360 pan had so many missing "fiddling bits" near the rover. I complained bitterly in a thread on the "other blog" about these missing pieces over a month ago. Glad to hear JPL is completing the panorama "right and proper". |

...Attached is an image of Hawaiian lapilli (I forgot the jot down the URL). Weather it a bit, blow away the dust and it looks Martian... --Bill Accretionary Lapilli colorized MI pan of "west hillock": ![]() Not very useful color for the large rock, it may be informative about the relative color of the smaller ones. This is synthesized L2 / L7 ( infrared / ultraviolet ) so there is no pretense it is accurate -- but it is suggestive. To my simple mind lapilli on a planet with the largest known volcanos in the solar system make a lot of sense. |

Ooops: Got Before and after mixed up in the super 3D image. The 14.5 meter measurment is to the 4.06 degree before size and the 3.29 degree is the after size. The recalculation puts Oppy 3.4 meters further away from Beagle. I was really puzzled by the sol 885 navcams of West Hillock. They look closer -- so I measured and sure enough, Oppy was 3.1 meters closer! So I went back and looked at the super 3D... Sorry about that. |

Route map updated to sol 885 - Small (2.6m according to the tracking database) drive for weekend IDD work on "West Hillock" super 3D of Beagle from sol 884-885 movement: ![]() I used this image and a parallax measurment on sol 884 to calculate a 2.8 meter movement towards Beagle. The technique uses the change in angular size of features plus a single distance measurment. The features were 14.5 meters and 6.59 degrees wide on sol 884 and 8.13 degrees wide on sol 885. |
