Welcome to Vesta! NASA's Dawn Spacecraft Enters Orbit Around Asteroid Vesta PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Dawn spacecraft on Saturday became the first probe ever to enter orbit around an object in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/dawn/new...wn20110716.html |

It would be good to know the source, because it is wrong. The first repeated trajectory will be at survey altitude 2700 km (1700 miles) above the surface. Until then, the movement will be mainly governed by the gravitational action of Vesta, but the contribution of the ion propulsion will turn its path into a spiral. And a spiral, according to the lessons I had when I was in High School, is not an orbit. What I meant was that Dawn will enter Vesta's gravity well on July 16. The source for my previous post: http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_05_03_11.asp On July 16, when the ship is at an altitude of around 15,500 kilometers (9,600 miles) and propelling itself with its ion propulsion system in the same way it has been for more than 900 days of interplanetary travel, Vesta will gently take hold. For the first time since September 27, 2007, when Dawn rode atop the second and third stages of the Delta rocket for a short time in Earth orbit, it will be bound to a planetary body. |

From what I read online, Dawn will actually enter orbit around Vesta once it's 9,900 miles from the asteroid. I was referring to orbit insertion in my previous post, to be specific. |

Dawn is currently not thrusting... How awesome are the photos it's taking of Vesta right now? |

Even though this is just a CG image, nice to see Vesta looming ever closer to Dawn. 5 days and 18,200 miles (29,300 km) to go! |

I attended the Tweetup last Monday...it was totally awesome. I like how Doug gave the group photo process a methodical, NASA-esque treatment. (In ElkGroveDan's photo above, I'm the Asian guy to the bottom right side of the pic--in the white and blue checkered shirt) |
