QUOTE (CryptoEngineer @ Sep 26 2022, 06:40 PM) *
Strong vibes of 7 year old me watching Ranger 7 send photos as it crashed into the Moon in 1964.

Same here. Back then, hitting the moon with a working spacecraft was hard. We have come so far since then!

So much international effort almost serendipitously focused on this asteroid makes me so happy.

I love it when a plan comes together!

I was at the cape to see this mission launched. I'll never forget the sound; my chest being hit by punches and the ground shaking. What a grand time to be alive.

This is amazing. Anybody want to build a wind farm on mars? Poor insight lander.

I'm wondering if we see lots of this at jezero crater?

At the angle the mole is drilling, would it drill right under the seismometer package and would it effect seismic results?

This is caprock so it might be hard to drill. I hope we get one!

Thanks for the article. Asteroids are a rich load to mine as they tell of planetary formation - destruction. Hard call on dwarf planet or not.

It looks to my amature eyes that the blocky rock at the top is a kind of cap rock. Harder and more consolidated. I know it doesn't rain on mars but still....

Correct me if I'm wrong but I am struck by how complex the stratigraphy of central butte is. It seems layering angles are all over the place. Maybe an unconformity from the lower half to the upper half?

This is what I expected would happen. The mole was trying to get around an obstruction, but couldn't because it was still partly in the delivery tube and couldn't tilt. Bad luck.

According to spaceflightnow.com ESA thinks they will need up to five years to find the comet they want, and need it to be found 5 to 6 years before closest approach to the sun for the project to work.

I love it too. Just wonder how you get any decent delta V on those small probes.

Interesting! The mission blog says they believe the mole is down 30 cm, with 7 cm still in the support structure if I interpret them correctly.

We don't know how much modeling they have done and a move now seems risky, but beggars can't be choosers.

Maybe they pull the structure up and it frees the mole from the structure it's rubbing against so it can proceed down at an angle.

I love that you are interested in the fine details of early sat comm, preserving the nuances of actual comm that could be lost with time.

Someone call Brian May. He loves this stuff. I just hope the parallax is good enough.

Brian May has had a life long interest in stereo photography. As he has moved through life, he never forgot this. There are several books, which show 3d pictures of both Queen and space related topics. I have read that Apollo astronauts were trained to take stereo photo pairs.

How cool is it to listen to queen and look at the photos!

Heck yes. Looks scary close to a super sensitive seismometer. But in hindsight, it could never be very far away and I'm sure the dynamics are well understood.
