Despite the restrictions due to the current coronavirus crisis, ESA is preparing for the April 10's BepiColombo Earth flyby. Celestial mechanics is, of course, immune to the virus Here is an ESA article on this subject: http://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Spa...onavirus_crisis Fernando |

Update to sol 2695. Curiosity has made it to the top of the slope. Well done! Crossing the Greenheugh pediment will not be easy, judging from the orbital pictures, but the drivers are "out of this world". Fernando

Thanks Phil! Here is an update to sol 2577, including names from Phil's maps and a few from a presentation by Dr. Vasavada. I have fixed as best as possible the problem of the broken URL to JPL's raw images: The URL is now correct and no longer fails. The pages do open in the GE application. However, the pages are not fully displayed, notably the images are not shown, and there is nothing I can do about it. The JPL pages possibly are - my guess - using some code which is unsupported by GE. However, there is a button on the GE browser window's top right which is labelled "Open in [your favourite browser]". Click it and the correct page is opened. Thus it is still possible to get to each sol's images from GE. I do not like the solution but I think that it is the only one. Enjoy Fernando

The ones used for Curiosity where ejected during EDL way before landing And the ground impact marks of the two large (75kg) masses were imaged ... The masses were ejected before EDL and were used as balance masses during the cruise phase. The image's description is quite interesting, including the cruise stage related information. There were other six smaller (25kg) masses ejected at much lower altitude, during EDL, whose impacts were also imaged. These were used to offset the centre of gravity during descent.
