Congratulation's Phil! I've found retirement to be quite nice and busy cool.gif . I wonder how in the past I managed to have time to work wink.gif blink.gif

Update to sol 1680. Curiosity is definitely out of the dune field and its route will now become more easterly, according to the notional route, see post #880. It has less than 900m to go before turning south and starting to climb the Vera Rubin Ridge.

"The Martian Way" KML file users may come upon Google's announcement of a new version of GEarth. Released today (April 18) this version, is browser based only, and can be found at http://earth.google.com/web

Regarding the suitability of this new version for viewing Curiosity's path KML file, I'd like to caution that, at this time, it is not suitable. In fact, the new version does not replace the desktop standard and pro versions. For instance, it does not have the Moon/Mars/Sky DBs, nor does it fully support the KML language. For a comparison of the new and old versions see https://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archives/20...ilable-now.html

Update to sol 1664. Just a few meters to go before the 16km and 10mi marks!
Added a few new names from JPL's traverse map, which is finally showing Ogunquit Beach (instead of Bay).

Thank you Sean for your kind words. Despite GE's limitations, and mine, if this work at least stimulates someone's curiosity that will be reward enough for me.

Update to sol 1653.
This update includes the data from the PDS Release 14, comprehending:
- Path data for sols 1 to 1571,
- Analyst's Notebook data for sols 1 through 1514.
Other changes and updates:
- I have thoroughly reviewed the path, to adjust for new data.
- The dunes campaign now has three segments: from entering the dunes area to Murray Buttes; inside Murray Buttes; and from exiting Murray Buttes to the present.
- I have split the folder "Locations and Targets" of each segment into separate "Locations" and "Targets" folders.
- As shown in the attached picture, the Locations folder's contents are visible by default; but the "Target's" contents are hidden by default (empty square), and can be made visible by checking the square. I hope this measure cuts on clutter and makes visualization more pleasant, without loosing any data. As always, feedback is welcome.

Congratulations Sean! Can't loose that Gigapan link. I'll be refering to it for many years (fingers crossed) while Curiosity makes its way to the end of the white line (and then I'm sure there are other places it can go).

You are right, of course, and I should have realized it beforehand.
I have removed the related texts, although I can't remove the posts themselves which, perhaps, a kind admin could do.
Fernando

KIND (OF AN) ADMIN: Done. Thanks! smile.gif

Just to clarify, discussions of all Falcon launch and landing activities are fine, which includes Dragon capsule recoveries. Discussion of mission activities in direct support of crewed spaceflight, not so much.

I hope that was clearer...

I saw JPL's refresh last night but it was too late for me to work on it.
So here is the update to sol 1605. Good paths and locations.

I grabbed a crop of Sean's "Mount Sharp Northwest Flank" (from Gigapan) and roughly marked Curiosity's route up to sol 1589 (green), it's current position (yellow star) and the latest "notional route" from JPL (red). Hopefully it will be helpful. Sean's work has added another dimension to my awe for this mission.

Sean's work is absolutely brilliant, I greatly enjoy it, and the latest work on Gale has already helped me.
Curiosity has been climbing steadily so, as a complement to Sean's perspectives, here is a GE elevation profile of the route since sol 1433 (shortly after entering the Murray Buttes area) representing a difference in height of about 95m. I wish GE had the same DTM and high resolution Sean is using (double sigh)!

Here is an update to sol 1589. Curiosity is approaching the narrowest gaps yet through the dunes. It is not clear from Emily's 3D map in Post #784 which way is best. And it is all uphill, as the route has been for a while now.

Happy 2017!

The file below uses the data from PDS Release 13 including the path for sols 0 to 1433 and Analyst's Notebook links up to sol 1417.
The "route wiggle" (sharp angle) for sol 1373, which first appeared on JPL's Location Map for sol 1383, does not exist in the PDS data.
I have also included a link to Phil's map of activities around Precipice and the provisional path for sol 1571.

SpaceX released a report on the causes of the "September 1 anomaly". Their site has been updated (link) accordingly.

QUOTE
The accident investigation team worked systematically through an extensive fault tree analysis and concluded that one of the three composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) inside the second stage liquid oxygen (LOX) tank failed. Specifically, the investigation team concluded the failure was likely due to the accumulation of oxygen between the COPV liner and overwrap in a void or a buckle in the liner, leading to ignition and the subsequent failure of the COPV.

The target date for return to flight is January 8, 2017 with the launch of Iridium NEXT from Vandenberg.

Edit: launch delayed to at least January 14 to avoid bad weather and range conflict.

Edit 2: Success! wheel.gif 10 Iridium Next satelites delivered to orbit and first stage sucessfully landed on the drone ship "Just read the instructions", with a clear view of the descent up to and including touchdown.

Return to flight in early January 2017! Quoting from SpaceX's latest update:
QUOTE
December 7, 10:30am EDT

We are finalizing the investigation into our September 1 anomaly and are working to complete the final steps necessary to safely and reliably return to flight, now in early January with the launch of Iridium-1. This allows for additional time to close-out vehicle preparations and complete extended testing to help ensure the highest possible level of mission assurance prior to launch.

Update to 1526. Curiosity backtracked and went around a small rise, passing the 15 km point during the drive.
As JPL location maps report 14.99 km for sol 1521 and 15.01 km for sol 1526, I placed the flag at the drive's middle point.
