Excellent 3D map! The twists and turns now make sense to me. Curiosity trully has "outwordly" class drivers!
Update to sol 1310 plus provisional to sol 1311 (I think Curiosity's track can be seen very close to the edge).

Steve, while Phil looks at his tarot cards (any chance you could share?) you may want to take a look at Post #742, but take it with some salt...
Just compare the notional path with the actual one.

This update adds the data from PDS Release 11, which covers the path up to sol 1167 and Analyst's Notebook entries up to sol 1159. The number of data points for the path grew again, it is now over 14100.
Thanks to Lauren Edgar for her information on the total distance travelled (Astrogeology News for sol 1285). This enabled a more precise location of the 12km mark, which cascaded to the 11 km mark. I reviewed all the other km marks, but still have to do the same for the mile marks.
Finally, I also added a provisional update to sol 1289.

Here is an initial result from PDS Release 11 data: the full path and its GE elevation profile for sols 0 through 1167, with all the caveats about resolution, etc.
The intention is to convey a sense of the path's topography and underline the fact that MSL is really climbing now.

Phil, I feel the same... I've just spent over 3 hours correcting the path to sol 1269 and adding the path for sol 1274, using the images available from "Where is Curiosity". I believe the mobility data may be corrected from one PDS release to the next, and images are used to do it. Apparently the same does not happen with the data source(s) that Joe Knapp and Google use (I wonder which ones they are) because they have been persistently giving an offset path for a long time now.
Here is the update to sol 1274.

Update to sol 1267. Corrected the path for sol 1262.

I also changed the information pop-up for the sols, but this change can easily be reverted. Thumbnails of the images are now shown. Sol 1244 is a good example. However, this requires loading the images and it takes longer for the pop-up to complete. Thus, I am not really sure whether this is a real enhancement people would like to have. Your opinions are welcome, here or via private message. Thanks.

And a Navcam left panorama, also for Sol 1264

Thanks Sean. Now I can pinpoint the location, I think, and add the path till sol 1264.

Using Fernando's Google Earth kml files of the notional paths posted on the MSL Route Map thread I have created this composite path to the mountain.

Good job Paul.
It is fun isn't it? Glad to know these plots have some use.

Update to sol 1250. Edit:with links to Phil's activity maps at Gobabeb.
Also corrected the path for sol 1187.
Contrast with the notional path around the dunes recently added to the "Planned Paths" KMZ.
Fernando
Edit 2: USGS tells us that somewhere on sol's 1248 drive Curiosity has passed the 12 km mark. I will move the flag once I know where to wink.gif

The paper mentioned by Phil on this post on another thread includes an image with Curiosity's path since about sol 1167 to the present, and beyond for about another 1.6 km (1 mile). This prompted me to update the "Planned Routes" document I first introduced a while ago in this post. Please note that Google Earth allows opening and visualizing many KML/KMZ files at the same time.

Life is getting back to normal, but still no chance to include the new PDS data.
Update to sol 1215 and provisional to sol 1216.
Edit: plus a flag for the New Year location and another for 12 km.

I'm afraid that updating the kmz with the latest PDS data will have to wait until next year.
I might be able to post again in the next few days, otherwise Seasons Greatings and "see" you next year!

Here is a crop from MSL Traverse Map for Sol 1183. The ground seems to be sloping up, as the contour lines show a difference of at least 6m. Whether or not those are applicable to the High Dune itself I do not know. I have not seen similar data covering the Namib dune.

QUOTE (Phil Stooke @ Nov 25 2015, 03:32 PM) *
... I moved the name 'Dune 1' to where it presumably should be. Any help with names here will be gratefully received.

Phil

Phil,

I have taken the location of "Dune 1" from the NASA/JPL news release at this link.
However, that page is linked to from this page where the distance from the location on 16 November (sol 1165) to the next dune is quoted as 200m. This seems to imply that "Dune 1" is actually to the SSW of the rover, as the distance from the location on sol 1165 to the dune to its SSE is about 100m.

But the latter mentioned page also links to this page which shows the dune SSW of sol's 1162 location and names it "Dune 2", which is why I used it.

Perhaps a future Astrogeology News entry will clarify this matter.
