Has anyone heard of any plans for a extra solar system probe? i read some time ago about they might use the Ares 5 to get it out there.

What about mass you actually need to launch? Does it go down as well?

it would be less fuel mass to launch than a reguler orbiter.

There is the opportunity, brought up in another thread, for a Jupiter > Saturn > Neptune tour with launch opportunities 2016-1018. It could then go on to visit one or more KBOs. A presentation on this opportunity as a New Frontiers candidate was made to a group reviewing the program in November, I think.

An ideal mission would drop a probe into the Saturn atmosphere as well as Neptune. It would also do a close fly-by of Triton. Don't know if the orbital mechanics will allow this and still do the probe relay.

This had me thinking... why can we not have three droppers, one at each? This would make an orbit of Neptune cheaper. How do you ask.. if you drop of a probe into Jupiter, Saturn, and before you make Neptune orbit you have less mass to slow down. what do you all think?

Can't say I really know all the details-- Any gravity assist needs some sort of delta-V in the well, right? I think the Jupiter-Sun dual gravity assist was suggested for some interstellar probe. And I think it jettisoned a sun-shield when passing the sun, so there was delta-mass as well.

when will a "Grand Tour" set be available next? that would add alot of Dv, like the Voyagers.

i would not expect to see a mission to Sedna till after NH reaches Pluto. This would give the enginers an idea what kind of sensors they would need. waiting till after 2014 or so will give time for more development of engines (post launch), and launch tech.

I expect an update at only 3.14159 billion km from Pluto, as that figure will obviously be of cosmic importance as well!

Well, NH has travelled 1.5 Billion KM (well 1.499 as this post). and she is almost 2 now

UPDATE! On 09/10/2007, at 08:36:45 UTC, the NH spacecraft reached 1100 million km from the sun. The spacecraft's distance from Earth, by comparison, is nearly 1.108 billion km. Halfway between the mean orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, NH is now less than 3.616 billion km from Pluto and traveling at a rate of 19.97 km/s. Later!

just an FYI NH is down to 70,000 KPH but still going good

Not a problem for birds flying above the dish, as the power is divided by he surface. But a bird flying under the emitting horn at the focal point of the dish will be in trouble. I hope there are some protections.

i saw something on the messenger web sit. it has the Current Total Distance Traveled box that changes as you watch (ie you could have this has your home page and watch it leave.
http://messenger.jhuapl.edu/index.php

now this makes me think what is the fastest time a space craft has made it to 1 billion miles from earth?

okay i'm new but i have a few q's

what was the cost of the atlas 551?

what is the cost of the delta 4H?

Could the Delta 4H give more Delta V then what was givin to NH1?

I know one of the problems with using a bigger buster (be sides cost) is the g stress on lift off, could they do like the Titan 4b have the center CCB run at alower thurst (ie saving fuel on lift off for more Delta once in orbit.

would this help or hurt the NH2 program?

(i went with the delta because it has flown and the atlas 5H has not)

thank you for your time
