I've emailed SteveS to find out the most appropriate address to send the Golden Trowel. It's a work in progress, but it's going to be a combo 1000 sols of surface operations and digging-out-opportunity award smile.gif

I take it this puts to bed the possibility of an NH2 ?

Does Juno have a website ?

I'll create a Jovian section for the forum in a bit

Doug,

I came across this folder/file renaming utility.  I haven't tried it, but it looks like it may be the answer for you when S1K rolls around. smile.gif <fingers crossed>

Or just

rename sol* sol0*

I entered that DS2 comp as well - with Romulus and Remus. Scott and Ammundson were good names though - I liked those.

Somehow, the powers that be dont learn the lessons..2 is better value than 1.

Pioneer 10 & 11
Voyager 1 & 2
Viking 1 & 2
Aqua,Terra (& Aura)
MER A & MER B
NH1 & NH2 should be on this list.

I'm writing a little ( well, a big ) piece on reusing the MER design again. GPS sats, TDRS sats, hell, Iridium, NOAA, Meteosats....the more you make, the cheaper it gets - and the saving is biggest from a volume of 1 to a volume of 2.

Similar issues with MER to some extent, Pan/Haz/Navcam take images at 12bit, and that gets converted with a lookuptable to 8bit as a form of compresison for transmisison.

Just a quick note - I've been AMAZED at the response. Not in terms of numbers (half a dozen people or so) but in terms of generosity!

In total - I've recieved £96.90 of donations, which equated to aout £85 once Mr Paypal's taken his bite. Just amazing - I wasnt expecting 1/4 of that !! A big thankyou to everybody.

A heads up to the Cafepress store ( http://www.cafepress.co.uk/unmannedspace ) - the clothing has been a bit dissapointing ( we got a couple of pieces here ) but the Mugs, Clock, Coaster and keyring look fab smile.gif

The way it works is to have an antenna length that matches the wavelength (or a fraction of it, 1/2, 1/4 ) of the signal being used.

I'm not a radio scientist, but the size of the antenna is important and is designed specifically for the signal being used. I would guess that not having the full (and thus exact length) antenna deployed would greatly compromise the science return, if not rule out operation all together.

Ted - what technique are you using for the super res? Tim Parkers technique is 1000% size, unsharp mask, then stack in photoshop at, say, 20% for 5 images, or 10% for 10 images. I guess the best way to align would be to use 'difference' layer option and move around till you have the lowest ammount of content, before switching back to 'normal'.

For the super-res imaging of the heatshield from Spirit, I did a 500% scale, unsharpmask, then aligned and stacked in registax.

Main theory I heard was that the terrain they ended up hitting was very soft and sometimes quite rolling - so they probably destroyed or burried too deep on impact

"The prominent cylindrical object in the lower right of figure 91 is a protective shroud that covered the surface sampler during transit to Mars. It was deployed the second day after landing. Its regular outline and brightly reflecting surfaces stand in vivid contrast to the natural scene."

It could still be a DD - they've been observed as being several hundred metres across at times.

Some have been resolved by the MOC WA cameras - and that means they must be at least 250m+ across sometimes.

this one is a real beastie though - looks amazing!

Well - theres only so much imagery you can take sat in a dune - so I guess they can really dump out the flash - so they can do a lot of remote obs of the dune post-egress to try and identify the 'flavour' of dune that leads to this.
