Yeah - the heatshield would be a very cool target, not just for engineering reasons - but also to see the hole it's dug biggrin.gif

I cant possible see how it can get anywhere near burns cliff - and I thought the whole point of Karatepe was that it was the same geologic units as seen in burns cliff. You can follow the strata around the rim and that makes sense.

More suprises from mars it seems. The Arctic Islands seems like something I predicted a few days ago - driving down a little more and to the right to the little bits of rock near the beginning of the dunes.

What we really need is some more MOC imagery - we've not seen if they've caught an MER on the rove from Orbit yet biggrin.gif

Isnt it odd - I'm the same - but it's the evidence that we've actually been there that I like the most.

The Lion King panorama was great - and I liked the pan I did about 20 sols out from Bonneville of the tracks curling thru the terrain.

I think a colour pan from Spirit looking back down on the distance out to bonneville some 2km away will be amazing, with the tracks just curving up at the foot of the hill

Any reason - best pictures, best science, best wow factor, best whatever - if you could have only one rover - which would it be smile.gif

Surely the slopes are going to decrease as they approach the bottom so I'd think whatever slippage the material presents would be offset by the flatter surfaces.

thing is - dunes = very soft and dusty - whereas much of the rest of the crater is more like bedrock. I wouldnt want to drive this thing into the dunes - perhaps get a little closer - but certainly not into it

What exactly did he say about the rovers that annoyed so many people?

That they were crap, basically smile.gif

Which was not a clever thing to say when the only chance of getting your payload to the surface is to do it yourself ( which he failed at ) or hitching a ride with the Americans. smile.gif

Unfortunately, the BBC's science reporting skills are - uncharacteristically - very very poor, often innacurate, and resorts to sensationalizing issues. They do correct errors when they're told, but there are far too many to begin with.

I for one would much appreciate it. Just something that'd take all the imgs in a folder and PNG them would be perfection!!!

Only problem is - that Gif or JPG - you're limited to 8bit greyscale data - and some of the images will be 12 bit sad.gif Photoshop can handle 12 bit which is just SO frustrating -ARHSAghhgeghaheahfhgh

Surely someone should do an .img Photoshop importer biggrin.gif

I think I might email Dr Parker again biggrin.gif

I take it you used NasaView to read the img?

I must admit - it's so good to see un-butchered imagery biggrin.gif

I'm very busy on a 3D project at the moment ( involving an electric land speed record attempt ) - but once the rush for that is over - i'll be looking at the raw imageyr properly

Nothing happens in those images - I really cant see what you're talking about.

Not to mention that all those images are taken within about 7 minutes of one another.

What are you trying to suggest then?

I see nothing 'untoward' as it were in this images. Wheels have run along the neigbouring rock - the edges have touched into the soil and moved things.

I did notice the majority of the distant pictures of Phoebe appear over-exposed. The RAW image FAQ states they haven't been processed in any way, so what exactly happens to these RAW images before they're placed on the web?

They get..umm. processed smile.gif They have to be - most of the images taken are 12bit images - and a JPG can only be 8bit - so there HAS to be processing by default. That processing is done automatically I assume - and the algorythm for it is a bit stupid - it just takes the brightest thing in the scene and makes that white, and the darkest thing in the scene and makes that black - and interpolates ( badly ) inbetween.

If it was done more intelligently, we would see moon detail - I am sure. You dont build a multi-billion $ spacecraft, fly it billions of miles, and then get your exposures THAT wrong biggrin.gif

They look fine to me smile.gif I think I can smuggle you a few unprocessed but non-saturated versions of those images.

It's the difference between a botched 8bit JPG, and a lovely 12bit PROPER raw image I guess smile.gif

I certainly see the bottom half of what you're seing. It might be an altitude related thing - like the geologic version of a tree line perhaps? As to if it's going down in the middle, or up in the middle - well, bring on the radar biggrin.gif
