I think I might be off in places - but you can see obvious features from orbit - good stuff

The thing is - they cant really stop on the sides to investigate the interesting formations that are under the whiter rock units we've seen at Eagle, Anatolia and Fram - but above the crater floor which is covered in the usual wind blown dust and so on.

I dont see any side less than about 40 degrees at the top - even though it levels out quite nicely towards the bottom

A few sols of workout for Pancam with all filters, and plenty of Mini Tes - perhaps a drive around 1/3rd of the rim - and then off past the heatshield to the exposed rock 2km south of here.

Essentially - the same as Spirit did at Bonneville. Look but dont touch.

Thing we heard a lot about (I'm sure Nick can expand on this) was that craters 'turn over' the layering - but I dont really see much of that here?

QUOTE (cassioli @ Apr 30 2004, 12:49 PM)
As Mars atmosphere has 1/1000 of Earth's atmosphere density

Typical earth density = 1000 mbars

Typical Mars Density = 6 - 12 mbars - typically 8

Thus, approx 0.8% the density - or 8 1/1000ths

probably new ones are created every month (week? day?...). ohmy.gif

Luca

Every century - perhaps even less frequently.

The winds may be fast on mars - but the atmosphere is so very thing it has little force.

Most of the little dimples around here will probably be secondary craters from larger impacts anyway.

I'll find them, eventually... tongue.gif

Ahhh - wrong way to go about things

You look at what there is and come to conclusions on what there is.

You dont look specifically for something.

Anyway, you can't tell you didn't jump on your chair when you first saw that "small dark rocks", don't you? biggrin.gif

The one that appears to be sticking up a bit. Nope - not really. You look at enough rocks and you're going to see odd ones like that eventually. And lets face it - one thing Gusev isnt short of - is rocks biggrin.gif

if you're using the dos version - thing to do is make a text file - save it as raw.bat - and in it, just have, for example...

rawid.exe 1P134052419ESF08AQP2859L5M1

put the raw.bat and rawid.exe into c:\documents and settings\your user

Then - start>programs>accesories> Command Prompt

It'll probably put you in c:\documents and setting\your user

then you simply go

raw.bat

and it'll print the results

You just edit raw.bat to have the file name you need.

You need to run it in the command prompt window because otherwise it just opens and closes in an instant.

it's very VERY usefull - esp. when the Exploratorium stuff is way way way ahead of JPL

You need to do two thing

a) give the subject a more appropriate heading. A Sol, a pancam target description etc

cool.gif Give us a clue on what we're supposed to be looking at - it's a patch of typical Meridiani ground as far as I can see.

Not sure if the results are as good as I was expecting - but hey - I'm sure Dr Parker will pull a blinder and produce something a LOT better in due course.

I'm not sure why the navcam works so much better. Is it the wavelength of the filters?

Or lack of filters all together - iirc, the Navcam and Hazcams are unfiltered, just the lenses and the CCDs doing their own thing. The horizon shots with L7/R1 are often so very very dark because of the over-compensation of the pseudo auto-exposure the images get put thru before being dumped online I think.
