It's a view to the SSW

The wide low middle-distance feature is that large messa - the feint feature beyond is - it would seem - the southern rim of Gusev crater.

another example of how futile our efforts are when the raw-images are so mal-treated before release

Are these likely to be pre and post APXS or Mossbauer?

Anaglyphs a no-go, the whole thing, done twice, is just too much of a horrid thought - Navcam IS more attractive for that. I might do a central section as an anaglyph, as the more frames you put into a mosaic, the harder I find it to get the anaglyph to work at the edges. 3 frames is about the limit in terms of width

Central 9 frames at about 30% full size - finished thing is 4 times wider ohmy.gif

Those are the 39 frames of a 3 x 13 frame panorama of the crater.

I'm going to go ahead and start it - it'll mean 39 frames, containing a total of 62 image overlaps that will require control-points to align them in PTGui - and generate a 13000 x 3000 pixel image (at least )

One thing I just can not do it get matching colour images. If someone can make those 39 frames in colour - I can pop them in as replacement frames in the PTGui file when I've finished and re-render out the panorama in colour.

I think I've gone mad.

L256 here - desperately tried to match colours to make it 2 x 20 frames, but it just wasnt happeneing.

I'll try and do 2 x 8 or so in just L6 later.

But that doesn't affect the possibility that this could be fossils.

Apart from the fact there is a proven geological process behind how they formed.

Give up, honestly, I see no reason to suggest there is a posibility they are fossils - no reason at all. They dont even look like fossils.

Also - given the air pressue and temperature on mars, it's impossible for liquid water to exist on the surface - so there is nothing that could 'look wet'

We're seing a load of the middle ground pan coming down, AND some from the panorama at the top of the crater - but still nothing from inside the crater - which is the strangest damn thing I've ever seen frankly. 30 days driving somewhere, and then you dont look at it

The fossil one can't be ruled out, too.

We've seen them sliced open, in their entirety, broken, merged, falling out of every single bit of outcrop - they're just geology. If - for ONE moment - there was ANY chance they were evidence of past life - do you think for a second that nasa wouldnt be dancing on the streets and waving its hands in the air?

If it were anything else -it would have flagged up in the mossbauer and APXS work that has already seen these things measured, against soil and rock

There is also a proven, geological process that generates forms like this - for which there is plenty of evidence already.

Yeah - I thought it MIGHT have been an orbiter - but you're only going to see those an hour or two either side of sunrise and sunset - not 2am local solar time ohmy.gif

This was obviously timed to be done just before or just after the 2am MGS pass when the rover wakes up - does a 128 kbps pass to MGS, then goes back to sleep again - so MGS would have been going overhead, but I'm sure it'd have been in orbital shadow at the time.

I find it odd they havnt looked at the chunks of rock (there are a few) that appear the same blue as the blueberry bowl. - The bowl is certainly quite empty biggrin.gif

We're having the same debate in two places at the same time biggrin.gif

Here's my 'other' explination tongue.gif

Meteroites? I doubt it - the statistical chance of any one navcam
image spotting a meterite must be tiny. More likey the streaks you
see are alpha particles winging their way thru the CCD during the very
long exposure.

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit_p067.html

Pancam imagery taken roughtly the same time. It's observation of
phobos or deimos as far as I can tell

I'd suggest that there are normal star trails in the pancam images -
but also much shorter streaks in the same style of the longer navcam
streaks - perhaps because the metalic casing for the pancam lens
assembly acts as a shielding barrel so that only particles with a
higher angle of incidence to the CCD can strike it - thus the shorter
trails - whereas the 'stubbier' lens assembly on Navcam allows a range
of particles from a wider angle to strike the CCD - hence the longer
streaks. Basically - we're seing the streaks that the apollo
astronauts saw in their eyeballs arnt we?

In that case, a few rat's and APXS/Moss on big chunks on the rim, some mini tes and 14 colour pancam work on the crater - then off to the hills after the software update at the end of the month

Statistically, I cant imagine they would ever get a meteroite thru the field of view - more like radiation isnt it?

Also - http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit_n067.html

2 am roughtly - some pancam images taken at the same time.

I'm not sure they didnt try and image one of the moons of mars - and hell, perhaps they tried to image Odyssey as well? Not sure if it would be visible at a 2am pass though sad.gif
