This is infact the heatshield, not the backshell.

The two look simialr, but the backshell is much larger and has a white parachute to the right, the heatshield is smaller and has a black impact site to the right

I'm on it biggrin.gif Hopefully enough to do some colour work. I'll start a new thread with any results.

Thanks for the heads up - I've got a hell of a headcold going on, so I'm not as on the ball w.r.t. image updates biggrin.gif

Astonishing demonstration that the raw images on the website just dont have the information that JPL gets on the proper stuff. That bottom left frame was an impossibility going on the L4,5,6 images on the raw folder. They were so violently different in treatment to the rest of the frame - and the central image still has one frame with half it's content missing.

Roll on the damn PDS release in 4 months for Spirit.

I had to re-upload them because they said 'Spirit' on them

In doing that - I borked the linkage biggrin.gif

Sorted now - I didnt think the anaglyph would work out to such a distance, but I was wrong biggrin.gif

I imagine the heatshield will be about one crater width to the right, of the right edge of the crater, so just off that view to the right. I'm sure they'll re image

And remember - once you have taken exposure into consideration, there is also the fact that the flat/dark field subtraction takes place on board the rover - followed by a stretching of the image so infact they send less than a full 12bit image down to earth. We dont know the nature of that stretching either.

biggrin.gif

Like to play with us dont they biggrin.gif On the upside, sol 60 on spirit will mark the 1/3rd mark toward the first PDS release of Spirits first 30 sols of data.

PTGui and Photoshop.

The thing to do is to align the image pair so they match at the point of interest - otherwise your eyes dont like it very much

Doing an 'after' IDD poke pan in b'n'w / stereo now

As a reminder - these are nothing like real colour, and I dont pretend that they are. They're just the best I can do with frames that are often very very different in colour ohmy.gif

Facinating stuff..

"as data is collected by Spirit, files are created and stored in the flash file system until a communications window opens — an opportunity to transmit the data either directly to Earth or to one of the two orbiters circling the Red Planet. Then the files are transmitted. They are still held in the flash system until retrieved and error-corrected on Earth. If data is missing, requests are sent for retransmission. If the data is intact, a command is sent to delete the received files.

"But there were also directories of files already placed into the file system in the launch load," Klemm said. "When we uploaded a new image to the rover, we recognized that those files would have to be deleted, because they were being replaced by a new set using different directories."

Accordingly, on Martian day 15 (or “sol 15”) of rover operation, a utility was uploaded to the rover to find and delete the old directories. "

I'm not a programmer, so I have no idea how this could be done, but to me, it would make sense on a pixel by pixel basis to generate a wavelength vs intensity graph, and take from it, values for R, G, and B.

However - we dont know the exposure of each pancam filter, and the stretch done on board before transmission, or the treatment on the ground, so really any such calculation is invalid

No reason why they cant image it to be honest, it's about 800m ESE of the lander - and has created a hell of dark impact mark. It's twice as distant as the backshell and parachute, sure, but the backshell is very visible, so I'd imagine the backshell impact might be visible as well. It may be that that the dark material is highly visible in one of the pancam's filters as well. The only thing it lacks is height - which may make it little more than 1 pixel's worth of feature in height.

Filters 456 - 6 being full size, 4 and 5 being half size.

The bottom left images are so drastically different in exposure or treatment, I cant get them to match the others in any way at all. Also - the 3rd image, top row (most of the centre petal) is actually just fudged from L4 and L6 as half of L5 is missing at the moment. (took an average of L4 and L6 and substituted it for L5.)

I'm fairly sure they'll have a better version of this at tomorrows press conf, but till then I'm very pleased with this image biggrin.gif

Well - a single frame is about 16 degrees.

Allowing for overlap - call it 14 per frame, 8 frames, so that image covers 112 degrees
