Youtube will actually take almost anything, and convert it itself. Perhaps Quicktime Pro ( load an anim gif, export to H264 .mob - then upload to youtube)

next bit isn't aimed at you directly.

This is a warning. Progress today may be negligible, it may be significant, it may be entirely invisible and non existent.

DO NOT attempt to draw too many conclusions, positive or negative, regarding the efficacy of the technique, the likelihood of a final extraction and so on. People using words like 'never' or 'certain' or 'wrong' will have firm forum wrist slappings.

Many of you were not around during the month of extraction at Purgatory Ripple. The old hands know how frustrating this process is going to be. Be patient. Do not jump to conclusions. Do not resort to superlatives.

Warning over.

As you were.

I would ask a few people who've posted in this thread to re-read the forum rules - specifically -

- 1.2 Politics - the discussion of politics is strictly forbidden. Discussion of politicians, politics, political parties, various topics of the moment (Iraq, Terrorism) are all very much off topic and posts that include them will be removed without warning

Stu - Ollopa - behave.

Note - this is not because what you have said is incorrect. It's because what you have discussed is specifically outside the remit of UMSF.

Bit of fun turning the elevation map into a coloured gradient, followed by a lighting effect (using the elevation map) - and then polar projecting the whole thing around the south pole. the result is fairly profound!

Post them, by all means. It's European data paid for by European tax payers (of which I am one). If anyone moans - they can come and talk to me about it smile.gif (and I shall bash them over the head, repeatedly, with my new iPhone 3GS )

Super resolution isn't really going to work with two push broom images. You're likely introducing more artefacts than improvements. It looks less sharp and phoenix less obvious than the orig two images I'm afraid. So drawing any conclusion from it is unwise

Keep in mind that if the rock topples,

The topling process might hit the rover. THe topling process may kick up so much dirt it obscures the solar arrays and the cameras, The topling process rips the IDD off. The topling process takes a solar array with it.

I'd keep a LOT of things in mind.

I will say - having tried in the past a bit - doing animations of stuff like reflective foil in deep space - it's a big challenge.

I wonder if it's a bit like the way Mars stops, goes backwards, then carries on, night to night in the night sky.

Osiris is a STUNNING instrument - 2kx2k CCD - can't wait to see what they come up with.

I just wish they'd release the data from previous flybys etc.

They might be planning a 360 before the IDD campaign to ensure they're in the best spot for an extended IDD campaign to give the FR a chance to catch its breath.

It's fairly clear from the location that it drove from its last know position, in a straight line partially back towards the lander, and stopped.

In a perfect world - it would have circled the lander. But the pathfinder landing site was far from a perfect world.

Actually - we can be fairly confident about how far Sojourner got after pathfinder died, as there's a fairly convincing identification via HiRISE of Sojourners location. We had an entire thread here about it- a pool of where we thought Sojourner would be smile.gif

So back to the database search. Select LISM datasets, search on Tycho coordinates, then choose TC orthomap, and bingo, lots of datasets.

I've had no luck with this yet - how are you using the four coordinates, are you ignoring the time fields, and which instrument sets, specifically are you using.

Not so much a cylinder - it's spinning bits with diamond tips that wear down.

Spirit seems to have done 16 grinds, the last being Sol 416 on a target called Watchtower.

Opportunity seems to have done 35 grinds so far.

Rock = perhaps 60 x 30cm. Shadow at 3pm is about the same. Totaly surface involved, maybe influencing 4 HiRISE pixels.

It's the impact for downlink that's massively, the dominant force here. It's a double digit percentage hit on Mars Odyssey's downlink to do MER. It's less than a single digit on MRO.

It's not time - it's data volume.

MRO doing relay is a much much smaller impact on MRO, than Odyssey doing relay is an impact on Odyssey. Relay on Odyssey could take a couple of hours out of every day for downlink. (a 15 minutes 128 kbps pass can take a long time at 33kbps to downlink )

At worst - it's a couple of minutes for MRO.

In terms of total science done - there's less loss by asking MRO to do it. It's a BIT impact on Odysseys downlink budget - it's an accounting error for MRO.

And of course - there's science value IN the relay itself - i.e. the data returned from the rovers.

is the downwards movement really good?

We far far FAR too early in the extraction process ( step one of dozens and dozens and dozens of steps ) to say if it's good or not.

But it HAS started, and that's reason to be happy.

If you're going to be negative every time any motion doesn't correlate with your expectation of how things should or shouldn't go, you're going to go very very mad, very very quickly.

Using my Yaesu FT817 and a dualband monopole about 3m off the ground - I was able to succesfully receive RTTY from two payloads yesterday - Icarus and Xaben

One string received, for example:
M6DGE : icarus,708,13:09:45,52.244063,0.693690,30691,94.45,113.5,5.6,-3.7*28
http://www.robertharrison.org/listen/view.php

I'm this listed on http://www.robertharrison.org/listen/loggers.php
M6DGE 2009-11-07 14:13:42 52.60 -1.15 FT817 MOONRAKER 26 2009-11-07 13:08:33 smile.gif

I only got 26 packets in, as I could only get out to the shed about 10 seconds before the first payload burst.

BUT - I now know the system works, and just my £49 monopole from Moonraker could easily hear and decode 10mw at a range of around 140km. The antenna is going to be mounted higher in the future - possibly a deployable mast ( so I can always change hardware ) or on the roof of the house.
