AO19 doing morse - still with just the handheld and no Yagi yet.

I 'heard' about 7 runs of its telem. format, took me as long to decode it all by hand as it took 19 to get all the way back around again smile.gif - My best effort at decoding the figures I could understand are attached. Great little bit of fun that.

QUOTE (MarsIsImportant @ Aug 6 2009, 12:17 PM) *
.of course there is minor aeolian erosion happening on Mars. But that does not mean the forces are powerful enough to create a erosional pedestal.

Just look at the aeolian sculptures around Home Plate. The Aeolian erosion may be 'minor' - but it has been happening, almost unimpeded, for billions of years. Do not underestimate its potential.

uncharted territory.

The only way to avoid that would be a 5.5 year track back to the lander smile.gif

Your suggestion that there's dust up there could explain the depressions; it's certainly more plausible than denting. smile.gif

It's out of focus, remember, and over the last 5 years, you can see the dust arriving, getting blown away etc. With the recent cleaning events and the strong winds inferred - clumping and moving of dust is to be expected. It's well worth hunting for normal pancam images of it to get a better idea.

Do you mean the dust on top of the LGA ( the pipe like antenna ) which has been there for years or the crimping around the edge of the HGA (which has been there since it was made)

Not sure what you consider a 'dent'. Can you point to it specifically.

That's the problem - everyone in ESA member states paid for MEX and Rosetta....but because we didn't all pay for HRSC, or, say, OSIRIS....those specific instruments think they can get away with near zero outreach. It's near criminal.

As a result - as I presented in that talk - some researches asked school kids aged 12-15 here in the uk
"Can you name any organisation from anywhere in the world that carries out space research?"

the top answers were NASA, followed massively behind by 'don't know' and 'Russian'.

And I quote
QUOTE
“ESA had one more response
than Area 51 and just two more
responses than ‘Men in
Black’....the British National
Space Centre (BNSC) was not
mentioned once!”

This was the summer after Mars Express and Huygens did their thing. It's not like ESA wasn't up to anything.

It gives me rage.

edit : I see someone decided to ignore this request. Post deleted. Twice.

This is actually quite an old project, and I'm not entirely sure any use is coming out of it. Something like Galaxy Zoo, where they're involved with the community and producing amazing science is great to get behind...but I'm not sure the same is true here.

Videos are getting added a few at a time to www.batc.tv in the film archive section. Ed & Fergus's balloon talk is up, mine will follow soon I presume. Presentations themselves at PDF's ( without movies etc ) are here : http://www.uk.amsat.org/component/option,c...per/Itemid,278/

It saw all the pieces

http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/ESP_011980_2485

Feb '09.

I'm not sure what's going on with HiRISE. Looking at Opportunity and Spirit - the earliest images are the best. But there ARE images AS good as that in each months updates. PHX is an odd-ball because of low light angle, thus having to crank things up to get an image.

Spotted a new ESP image - it's been up a while, but I hadn't spotted what I think is a big fold up of the chute - The heatshield impact seems greatly subdued as well. Perhaps the significant change of the seasons invokes high wind speeds, which, combined with the arriving frost - has done some proper work at the PHX site.

My take on all the coverage so far is that either they are being very cautious or they really don't think there is much chance of getting unstuck. I've not seen any mention of a scenario that has succeeded in the test bed.

"We are seeing motion, and it is promising. But from what we see on Earth, we still believe it is going to take a while once we start the extraction process on Mars" - that's Sharon Laubach quoted at the MSNBC Cosmic Log.

The CU Spaceflight guys helped them out - hopefully Ed will get to taste THE SPACE CHEESE smile.gif

True story - in double blind tests 9/10 people preferred port that had been up to 30k and back to a non-flown control.

We've already got, I think, a little bit of that bright feature in one MI image. I'll try and tie it together tonight. It's very bright.

Other reasons we're going to the rock (other than it being big). Not that there are other reasons to go in that direction.
