New thread to move Glens posts in to. And Glen - you should just 'edit' your first post, rather than replying to it to make a correction. |

Just look at Meridiani and Gusev. There's no way that Spirit was ever going to match one hard days drive across to Endurance. |

That said, the real reason might be because Doug is busy. I go away for 5 minutes, and this thread happens. LOTS of posts deleted. I will just lock this thread if you can't behave. People moaning about what is or isn't allowed on the board, by degrading the entire place with a thread like this. Maybe I just have to turn UMSF off when I'm away from a keyboard for more than a day. Seriously, people. Have some common sense. |

Just guessing the theory behind the practice - a long hard drive will push all the gear lubricant around, squeeze it out from where it's needed. Give it a couple of days rest and it can 'settle' back into the right place, thus giving better lubrication next time around. I'd imagine running gearbox heaters for a while would help speed up this process a little. Planning 'rest' days in advance may infact mean that the impact of the shift of Mars Odyssey to an earlier orbit can be reduced ( or the application of rest sols intelligently, combined with the Odyssey shift, can help each minimise the impact of the other ) by giving us pseudo-restrictied sols that can have post-drive imaging done post-Odyssey - which can push the time out on driving a little further into the afternoon. All guesswork from a back-seat driver. |

Hopefully they will be able to find somewhere like they did with WH3 - somewhere you can drive to, then drive 'off' to get a slope. D |

Changed the topic title from Mars Hill. The 'Mars Hill' is something specific, in Death Valley. |

Taken before the drive, it wouldn't have had the pretty tracks in it. I wonder if it was one of those 'happy accidents' like the Aviation Week Navcam Mosaic Doug |

It doesn't represent anything. From the HiRISE FAQ - http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/faq/ "What do RED, BG, and IR mean? These are shorthand titles for the different types of CCDs HiRISE has. The HiRISE camera has three different color filtered CCDs: red ("RED"), blue-green ("BG"), and near-infrared ("IR"). The wavelengths of these filters are as follows: RED: 570-830 nanometers BG: <580 nanometers IR: >790 nanometers What are the BG and IR EDRs, and How are They Different from RED? There are ten RED CCDs, two BG CCDs, and two IR CCDs. Combining the images taken by the three different color filters allows us to create "false" color images. The BG and IR CCDs are aligned with the center two RED CCDs, providing a two-CCD-wide color swath. This means that the images captured in the BG and IR products are aligned with the images captured in the RED4 and RED5 CCDs. What does “false color” Mean? "False" color means that the color you see in HiRISE images is not the "true" color human eyes would see on Mars. This is because the HiRISE camera views Mars in a different part of the spectrum than human eyes do. Nevertheless, false color imagery is extremely valuable because it illuminates the distinction between different materials and textures." |
