This discussion is pretty fascinating to me. Just as you guys are curious about the day to day operations on the rovers, I'm curious about what's behind the UMSF pages I see every day.

With the upgrade to Invision 3, you will have to say good bye to the legacy skin I'm afraid - it just makes no sense to spend the time to make it work.

This marks the first time that communications have ended with a successful lander since the demise of Pathfinder, 10 years ago. Astonishing.

From Mini-TES - not the solar panels. Mini-TES has a mirror at the top of the mast, which is caked in dust - they will shake it in an attempt to get rid of some of the dust.

QUOTE (Oersted @ Dec 2 2008, 12:08 PM) *
a default MT or Wordpress template signals a lack of care or attention on the part of the blog's owner, leading readers to think they can get away with something.

We're about a nanometer from a default invision board skin here - but I think it has the right sort of tone smile.gif

Moderation is not easy - you try to draw lines, but it's not a black and white situation - it may seem arbitrary to some, but here, at least, it works in the long term. Set the tone and the guidelines firmly, at all times, and it can work. BAUT manages to tread a very interesting line between what UMSF is like, and the Mars Rover Blog. I've spent 10 years in and around forums, and you can tell the troublemakers a long long way off usually. It's not especially pleasant watching a ticking time-bomb posting on a board, when you know you'll be hitting the ban button before too long, there's an inevitability about it, especially when they try to argue with the moderation team - that's always a terminal sign.

It's a fascinating ecosystem all of its own.

What do you want, a medal for complaining about something which 5 seconds with google shows to be totally untrue?

I think it's fair to say that the Indian authorities and the Indian press have far far bigger issues at the moment. Politics are totally banned from UMSF, so discussion of that subject is not allowed. Patience is called for.

Once again, however, I find myself wondering why people post here asking when people who have nothing to do with the forum will release something.

The 14 sols is simply what's available on the PCDB at the moment. There may be a longer plan - I don't know - we've been told elsewhere how long conjunction will actually last.

I rang Stu during one ISS pass a year or so ago, and it was amazing despite the fact that we're only 100-150 miles apart, it was in a dramatically different part of the sky - put the proximity into context a little.

Looks like a busy time - the Photon Transfer sequences are interesting, I'll ask some Q's as to what that's about. With a healthy rover, Conjunction must be frustrating. Safe, low data volume, but time consuming sequences are all good smile.gif

On 12-13th orbit Juno will intersect Jupiter's equatorial plane somewhere near the Callisto orbit,

And will Callisto be anywhere near Juno at that time? An orbit crossing doesn't mean a close encounter.

I can't imagine it being significantly different in hardness to any of the other rocks we've seen at Eagle, Endurance or Victoria - and it was remarked just how soft those were given the easy-time that the RAT had chomping into them.

Oh - it'll be back out of the aeroshell before too long, as it's got to have more instruments bolted on, more testing done on it etc etc. I think this was more a fit-test and I'd heard rumours of thermal/vac testing of the whole stack as you see it in those pictures as well.
