I think you know what to do smile.gif Yeah - the LRV's were cool - but they did the job they were designed to do. MER has done that, and then some.

MERFTW (and Stooke - none of that Lunar nonsense laugh.gif )

This isn't the thread for debating routes for the future - this is the route map thread - a place of reference.

Here http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...80&start=80
or here http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...0&start=660 is a more appropriate place for these discussions.

Firstly - I'd urge caution on expecting any number of sols for survival. Another 30 sols is possible, but a long way from being certain.

Also - don't get too excited by the microphone. It may not work - and if it does - it will almost certainly be unspectacular. If you want to know what Mars sounds like - go and stand 100,000ft above the Sahara at 4 in the morning when there are no aircraft around.

a major highway?

There isn't anywhere manmade, and big enough. You need something 20 miles long really, and 4, 5, 6 miles wide.

Black Rock is out, I've heard, as it has deteriorated over the past 10 years. Bonneville is so rarely fit for VERY high records (Thrust 2 just couldn't do it's thing there in the '80s.)

Lake Gairdner might offer something in Australia if it is dry. Lake Eyre is, frankly, cursed after the Bluebird attempt of the '60s. El Mirage isn't big enough. Bolivia might have somewhere. Finding a place is going to be a major part of the challenge.

Guessing here:
CODE
[b]Projectile Descriptors[/b]
[indent]  Projectile Diameter  2  meters   Projectile Density  1000  kg/m[sup]3[/sup] [/indent]
[b]Impact Conditions[/b]
[indent]  Impact Velocity  1.69  km/sec   Impact Angle  10  degrees [/indent]
[b]Target Descriptors[/b]
Target Density  1500  kg/m[sup]3[/sup]   Acceleration of Gravity  1.6  m/sec[sup]2[/sup]   Target Type  loose sand

Using the Pi-scaled transient crater, the final crater is a Simple crater with a rim-to-rim diameter of 0.167 x 102 meters.

So 16m?

I got the velocity by using Orbiter, and putting myself into a 40km x 0.007km orbit - and seing what my speed was at 0.007km altitide (wierd seing a shadow just under the vehicle at orbital velocity) - 1.69k/sec was the speed.

And no O2 for it's Eurojet engine - it would be stuck with just the hybrid motor.

English is a second language for the C1 team - and to be honest, I think they're doing an awesome job of it so far.

The shop is open purely by default - it's generated far far less money than it was worth taking the time to do it - I'd have been better off just giving people logos to make their own Cafe Press stuff smile.gif

I can't tell you how excited I am by it smile.gif I was going to post something last night, but wondered if anyone else would biggrin.gif

It has a hint of JCB Diesel Max on the nose - a whiff of the unlimited hydroplane in the middle, and..errr..look like a barn at the back but I'm sure that'll evolve.

I see what they're doing ( I think ) - heading far enough west whilst on good ground so that we can run south toward some etched terrain, running between dunes on the way, instead of hitting any side on.

There was going to be : http://www.sstd.rl.ac.uk/c1xs/C1_Launch.htm - however, it was cancelled. (I was going to attend that ) There was an 1000 meeting, but I couldn't make that. I've not seen anything on the media -( apart from very short pieces just showing the launch )

QUOTE (Shaka @ Oct 21 2008, 10:00 PM) *
Hmmm...why?

Because, if you look at the route finding thread, the challenge of the next few months is to get thru the dune field that extends from about 1km to about 2km south of Endurance. If we can stay on 100m/sol terrain, it's a few months. If we get into dune-land, it's a year or more. So heading SE, to one of a couple of 'out' routes thru that dune field, is the fastest way to make good progress.

Well done BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7679818.stm

Talks about the 'dark' side of the moon ( there is no such thing )
and puts a credit of ISRO on the image - when is should be Doug Ellison / RAL.

The still was lifted from page 1 of this thread as well.
