Well - my maths is probably off, but I get 1.86 km above the centre of mass of Enceladus - so basically an altitude of minus 248km

ish

18 kilometers/second velocity,

That would take all of Cassini's fuel tanks...and probably the Titan rocket that launched it smile.gif

FYI - the actual pluto debate itself has been had at UMSF before. It ended with raised tempers, arguments, attacks, people running to teacher to claim they were getting bullied. See the several threads in this sub-forum for further examples.

We're not going down that road again.

Whos job it is to decide, however, is a pertinent and interesting debate. Keep it nice.

I was worried this would turn into another 'define-a-body' argument, because we've really had enough of that here. But wow - we've got a new one, define-a-debate. Debating who can debate it is a nice new twist...I like it.

A few of us here probably know just how hard that must have been to pull together, to much kudos to the CCC for managing it smile.gif

I think they will be mainly rock-munching, and that makes for a much more managable medium in many respects.

See - thats our emotions projected upon a robot - that makes sense. One might feel sadness FOR Opportunity at leaving Victoria crater (I feel the opposite), but the vehicle itself does not smile.gif That's the differentiation of lexicon that makes it make sense.

Nobody can change what these planets 'are'.

But they can try and come up with a better way of categorizing them - the current system is utterly broken (and that's coming from someone who doesn't care if Pluto is a planet or not,I just want a definition that makes sense)

That's a pretty easy call, given that TEGA seems neither particularly well thought out or implemented.

And that is an utterly lousy call given that we have successfully delivered two sample, and have plenty of opportunities left to deliver more.

I get an overwhelming impression of sadness from Oppy

It's a robot. Much as I love them, you really can take the personification stuff too far.

A robot that's been spending months essentially stuck on sandy slopes, getting a broken arm, symptoms of a broken wheel, unable to really get to the beef of the science in there. Time to get out an do some sprinting? Bring it on.

Always KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) or you're just adding problems.

That's exactly how I would describe your entire suggestion.

Which parts of the instrument payload would you sacrifice for your additions, MECA, TEGA or LIDAR. Your call.

Langley was responsible, at least partially, for the Spirit movie of 'chute descent and RAD/TIRS firing -the file name is something of a clue.

The AMA in another filename suggests Analytical Mechanics Associates.

One thing of note - for cinematic reasons probably - Dan Maas never had the right Delta II Sequence in the MER anim or IMAX sequence. He seems to put Fairing sep just before SECO...when it's just after MECO.

wouldn't it be a bit odd to have staging, second-stage ignition, and fairing sep all happen within a few seconds of each other?

It's the norm, afaik. 5-10 seconds between each.

Fairing sep is moments later, so any dynamic pressure would be low I'd have thought. THis is all about residual thrust. Stronger sep springs would help as well I'd have thought.

This was a thread for speculation - not arguments.

Steve and Reed - if you want to start a fight - do it somewhere else. Several of your posts ( and a few others ) have been culled.

This is a thread, as Dan says, for MECA and perchlorate, not semantics.

We have a chemical that we may or may not have identified, that may or may not result from contamination, that may or may not have been confirmed when another instrument was used to analyze the soil, that may or may not be shot down in days when another measurement is made, and that may or may not have some bearing on the goals of this mission to understand habitability.

Thank you Mark, you've managed to say what I've been trying to get across.
