Oppy's heatshield..

...did something really unusual and belly-flopped it's way to making a little inside-out structure. That didn't happen for Spirit, which just broke into a few pieces and sat flat on the ground. The heatshields are not 1m tall.

It's probably just behind local topography, like the 'chute.

. From my point of view I would like lander software to be Open Source.

http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/blogsPost.php?bID=51

http://phoenix.lpl.arizona.edu/blogsPost.php?bID=42
specifically : "Also, the MET team is not allowed access to commands that interface directly with the lander. This means they actually don't have access to the MET_ON and MET_OFF commands! Because those are the ones that interact directly with the lander!"

Not only is the lander software a highly lucrative commercial product of Wind River, much of the lander software falls under ITAR, to an obstructive degree.

They had previously been announced ( both of them, iiirc ) as being earlier. I would essentially ignore the announcement dates and just wait for stuff to actually arrive.

Alice data is already available upto and including the most recent Earth flyby. No other instrument has provided anything to date.

We must have been there, what, 3 hours? And my shirt still hadn't dried out. Astonishing.

Mmm, I see a problem with too many pictures: bandwidth.

And, forum rules don't have exceptions. There isn't a magic ' except for this thread ' button on the rules. Do it in multiple posts. One post with a million images is not a forum post anymore - it's trying to make a web-page out of a forum post. A commendable thread, no doubt, but it's just not something the forum can accomodate. A forum wiki, however, would. That's a thought.

See you all in about 9 hrs.

'MSL' will do probably.

But with a laser beam and nuclear power...the only name you're going to call it is 'sir'

There's just enough room in the lobby for 8 or so people to meet up before moving on. See you at 7pm tomorrow!

Looked a bit unusual to me - blackening on the GEM's - and what looked like venting from the 1st stage shortly after launch.

Nice to hear it's up and away though smile.gif

That's the one. 7pm would be good - time to get back from the days exploring and freshen up. 7pm in the lobby, dinner at 8 would be a good call.

Is it a memory issue?

Yeah - Phoenix is pretty sucky for flash storage. They can't take half a full 360 in four filters at full res in a single sol and downlink over a week like MER can - there isn't room.

http://www.lockheedmartin.com/data/assets/14803.gif - all goldish MLI on the inside

V1, V2, MPF and MERA backshells all landed right-side up. MERB's didn't, and the 'chute is very tangled, I put that down to the chute not re-inflating after the end of the RAD firing. This one looks intact, but with the 20 kph winds, could well have come in at an angle and pitched over on impact.

Me and Helen are on - we've cleared Sat night - our hotel is basically outside Bryant Park - Sat daytime we're doing Lower Manhattan but anything after about 6pm is great for us. - we could meet in the foyer of the hotel ( Marriot Residence Inn ) but I'll leave it to you guys to pick an actual venue and get a reservation if required smile.gif

I owe Greg a beer. To be fair - he may be flying across a whole continent, but we're covering 3566 miles to his 2407.

Week 21 on '08 saw 39 registrations.

That's a record, beating 24 from Nov '05. (if you ignore the week that got 123 new regs because I accidentally turned off forum visibility to non members)
