It also costs an order of magnitude more than printing a plastic one.

just 50 seconds?

The uncertainty of the C/A time in the week leading up to the flyby was more than that.

That should basically answer your question.

As a heads up - we are slowly getting reconstructed pointing data from the NH team and putting it into Eyes as and when we can.

Yesterday a new release went live with some of that data included.

It should actually be pretty good.

I've tried ( but failed ) to find a source for the full res data - it's just so stunning.

Maybe there's a better source they're using....

Clearly, given the accuracy and error bars of the PDF oft cited in this thread.

To drop from 14km/sec to 1.2km/sec ( which is what you basically have to do ) in, say, an 1800km quarter circumference of Pluto would require an average deceleration of 5G. In your example - you would have to generate even more acceleration than that! It's just not going to happen.

One cheap NH-type craft ....

$650M isn't cheap - New Horizons was New Frontiers class. Only Flagship missions are more expensive. Unless you are actually building them at the same time, there is little to be saved by building any sort of copy.

New Frontiers missions are now in the region of $800M - and given the current budget environment, expecting more than two every decade could be considered highly optimistic.

the Dawn spacecraft is very exciting because it has fully demonstrated the capability of solar electric propulsion

This was done 15 years before by Deep Space 1.

RTLT (Round Trip Light Time) for New Horizons is only 31748.800883 seconds right now - approx 8hrs 49 mins 8.8 seconds.

Not sure where you got 18 hours from.

currently TXing at 9 bps.... that's a safe mode alright!! Usually it's between 1k and 2kbps

The Voyagers typically do 160bps. Something like Dawn about 125kbps - MRO upto around 5Mbps.

Has anyone heard anything from anyone about the status of any of the science data from any of the instruments/teams, or when any of it might actually get released?

It'll show up when it shows up.

I learned long long ago to never expect a data release on any schedule from ESA. That way, 5+ years later, when it does show up...it's a nice surprise.

How will Dawn map/measure the topography? I believe there is no LIDAR onboard like LRO, for eg.?

Stereo imaging and shape from shading.

There is a rather exceptional shape model generated from Dawn data for Vesta. The same will happen with Ceres.

what do scientists hope to get that they couldn't get from Galileo?

Data..

Galileo - 120bps.

Europa Mission - probably three orders of magnitude more.

Globe maps of Europa at significantly higher resolution that currently available

Instruments 30 years more modern than those on Galileo.

And - there may be a lander along for the ride.

What will we get from this mission that we didn't get from Galileo?

EVERYTHING.

Those speeds are all relative to their local frame of reference and absolutely ARE suitable for comparison - nothing wrong with it at all.
