I've taken a 3ds of pathfinder, added some crappy airbags ROUGHLY based on images...and rendered again at 25cm/pixel.....Pathfinder should, imho, be VERY VERY obvious and visible, without doubt. Doug |

Right - found a MER model, a Sojourner model, and fudged a basic Beagle model and Beagle heatshield. If anyone knows of other vehicles available in VRML that I could drop in, let me know. I've tried to simulate the lighting from that HiRISE image of Oppy at Victoria crater and worked from there. Doug |

You mean HiRISE images. I would have thought the efforts would have been going into finishing up the viewing software that has been mentioned elsewhere instead of doing the rush-job on releasing images that we saw during the transition phase. However - the MGS imaging efforts have probably disruted things at HiRISE HQ, and indeed to some extent the command and reception of MRO data in general via DSN congestion. Give them month or two to get into the flow of the primary science phase, get the viewing software sorted..THEN - you will have more images that time. It takes 6 to 12 months for an MGS MOC image to be released (if the PDS release is done on time) .... to start moaning about HiRISE releases at this time would be a long long way from reasonable ( not to mention off topic for this thread) Doug |

I set up my 400D doing 30s exposures every 34 seconds, F3.5, ISO 800, fully wide ( 18mm*1.6 so 29mm equiv ) when I went to bed - it took 247 exposures looking east, from 0027 to 0257 before the battery packed up in the cold of the conservatory. I figure I was capturing 88% of that period of time on film...a total of 132 minutes of exposed time. They're great images...you can watch Leo slowly rising - M44 is very visible - getting stars down to 7, 7.5, maybe 8. Not the ideal pointing, but the best I could do from the conservatory given that I wanted to keep everything inside....a few banks of light cloud popped through every now and again, but overall, I'm fairly sure any Leonid that I would have noticed by eye I would have seen on 'film'.. I know I didn't 'get' the peak....but even 5 per hour would have seen me get a couple at least... I have ONE streak on film....and it's not a Leonid. http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/doug_images/IMG_0107.jpg ( scaled to 50% ) I think the Lion had a night off, and I know Stu didn't fair much better in Kendal. Well - I thought that, but why would the spacecraft need ephemeris for itself or another spacecraft? That's what WE need so we can tell it what to do and when - unless it's a far more intelligent spacecraft than I thought and they're just telling it the orbital params of MGS and letting it work everything out itself.. (which I really really doubt) Doug |

I'm SURE I did a Beagle simulation at various resolutions a while back....I'll see if I can find it. V1 and 2 have MOC images to go from so that shouldn't be too hard and not too many rocks cast a big HGA shadow that I'm sure the viking craft will cast. Ahh - found something....not that great but... http://www.djellison.plus.com/lander_from_orbit.jpg The problem with B2 is that if it got to the point of deploying...it will cast almost no shadow at all. Well - those two posters are intentionally not to be reproduced. John Callas asked if both teams could have both posters, so I sorted out very high res images so they could do that - but that's it..... I made them for the two teams (and the words in Emily's blog from yesterday are very very true and from the heart ) - and they're not going to be done for anyone else. BUT.... I've thought about doing a third in the series that would be for everyone - and indeed I've already made a suggestions about doing it for TPS.....so lets see what happens....if all else fails....I'm sure I can hook something up via Cafe Press...but it'll be quite a few weeks before I know either way. Hi Jay, Unfortunately - you're talking about a period of space exploration which finished when I'm aged about 14.....so my knowledge of those particular missions is minimal...but I hope some of the more senior members can help you out! Doug |

I was fortunate enough to recieve a copy earlier in the week and it is spectacular. Just enough written word to give the sort of background I was hoping for, but enough images to make anyone go "ooooooOOoooo" I was going to write a little review for here - but Emily said exactly what I would have said over at the blog... I just hope someone took pictures of the MiniTES team's keyboard that morning.... (you'll have to read it to find out why Doug |

What's the rough illumination angle for near-equatorial objects? I can do some renders based on VRML or other rough and ready models - the one thing that my MERB @ HiRISE res simulation is fundamentally lacking is shadows Doug |
