Have you tried Emailing them Bjorn...given that you produce 'good stuf' - I'm sure they'd be prepared to pop something onto an FTP for you.

Indeed, how could one tell where the dust came from? It could be micro impact ejecta etc.

Something like the deployed area of the ISS array would be comparatively easy to deploy, fairly small to package - and of course it can be cleaned, and positioned for nice seasonal tilt smile.gif

Probably just the PC tracking site lagging a bit - I wouldn't worry.

They've said they'll deploy the flight software update in August ( Opportunity has the whole upload, Spirit was one file short as of the last FDU )

Why - Solar's worked rather well for two friends of ours and has plenty of potential if the money is invested in large solar arrays.

It would be relatively simple to do if we don't attempt landing,

There is nothing simple about flying an orbiter to Titan and deploying a balloon into its atmosphere.

Boom Boom.... 3 mins out

- and wheels stop - Discovery is home.

Great sound and video at the moment - you can here what I think is the chuffing of APU exhaust, and their turbines whiring away. I think I also heard the snap-bang of the chute mortar..AND...just now, the APU's winding down - very cool.

There's some broken cloud, but no precip within the range limit. It does look quite hazy, but no constraints or they wouldn't have gone for the burn.

They have a go for the de-orbit burn starting in about 9 minutes.

-A good burn, landing expected 1314 UT

We're talking a different mechanism here though. Before, it was ploughing deep into a dune. Here, it's a bit of a pile kicked up by the FR wheel that has a stuck steering actuator being dragged through the surface and then the pile being driven over. You're always going to get a different 'look' to tracks with such different mechanisms of creation.

Yup - Comp Fluid Dynamics.

I'm not sure if CO2 type dust removal is more likely during the height of summer - but I think we can throw anything quantitaive out the window (i.e. X m/sec etc ) as we just do not know enough about how the mechanisms of dust removal work.

Qualitatively, we had huge dust removal when we were on the slopes of hills, during summer, on generally west facing slopes. Out best chance of more clenaing would surely be to replicate these conditions.

I agree - I think a climb of McCool hill would serve two purposes...
1. Science
but 2 - much more importantly - get some cleaning. It was on the western side of Husband hill that we got cleaned last time around, and I think if we're lucky, and if we can even get there...then the same should be true on the western side of McCool - heck, I wonder if some fairly primative CFD of the topography might help find particularly windy spots to really get the best chance of a good dust-down.

Just thinking - 83ish Sols for Pathfinder, with Sojourner still going strong could be considered nearly a 12x 'shelf-life exceed'. I desperately hope that MRO might catch some tiny hint of where Sojourner is compared to it's last know location back in 1997.

Thinking of the MSL mast thermal issues - has there been any thought of a solar absorber ( as there was with Beagle 2 ) designed to just warm up during the day and dump it out over night...or is the risk then that during heavy useage, the entire lot ( and there's quite a bit of kit up there I guess ) would get too warm.

The two images are taken at the same moment - it's not an actual event, it's just an imaging articfact on one camera.

Just some rough and ready stitching as I've not done some for a while - Vic details are coming on quite strong...a little perch on some Beagle outcrop and we might get an even better view.

The low point was Pete saying
"There is no one fault that explains all the observables" and looking like a head teacher telling off the class when he said it. Scared the hell out of me that did.

This isn't NASA or MER or even ESA. This is a corporate exercise and they don't owe anyone anything ( except investors and shareholders) , and wont release anything unless it's got a nice spin in it and a positive reflection on B.A. - that's just the way corporate stuff is. If you're looking for regular updates...prepare to be disapointed, they're not going to come. What will come is general back slapping and lots of pomp, circumstance and self promotion and 'we told you it would work'. Someone will probably be on the TV saying "NASA should be flying these for the ISS but they didn't choose to do so" making it appear as if they actually had a choice when financially, it was never an option.
