OOops - too late smile.gif

I got the JPEG2K question in, asked about the cloud pictures, the Spirit dragging, how agressive they intend to drive - will they stop for the dark cobbles or the baby craters, picking filters for end-of-drive imaging, and the history of pancam right back to the pushbroom jobbie in the early '90s.

AND....news just in. Odyssey safed yesterday, so no pretty pictures for a day or two.

As long as we all agree it is very frustrating to have yet another space mission placed in jeopardy because the spring in the Jack-in-the-box does not work.

Well - the mission is not in jeopardy, it's simply one instrument that's not going to be able to do it's job. I agree, it is highly frustrating, but it's just another reminder that this stuff isn't easy to do.

You've lost me. The very best data is the RAD .img files as far as I know - what is it you're actually after instead of that?

Hostile - maybe some of the deep oceanic drilling equipment, but even that can get pulled up and sorted out - it probably sits at 4 degrees all day every day. Perhaps some of the equipment they have at the Antarctic Research Stations

But Hostile like Mars? Long-duration balloon experiements perhaps, but to be honest, I can't think of a long duration analogue on Earth.

It is not inappropriate to complain about the untimeliness of this release...

It IS inappropriate to bring Iraq into it, to use a rather crude phrasology when refering to the Italians and to have a post that saying nothing but "Grrrrrrrrr"

I hope so - having them not viewable at all was bad - but having them viewable but not editable is even worse ohmy.gif

I've used Polytrans quite a lot at work - but unfortunately, it doesnt do the job in this case. (I've tried alread

As I understand it - X3D is a derivative of VRML 2. PT can import VRML 2, but not X3D natively.

Their website says "Okino presently does not provide or can recommend any X3D to VRML2 converters; such converters should become available in the future."

Another tool to google for is Accutrans - but the same rules apply.

it requires that the spacecraft attitude is very stable, and there are some concerns about that.

SS mentioned that when I met him last autumn - I guess these test images will help answer at least part of that question, if not to the level of accuracy of the final orbit. I've read some HiRISE docs (via the power of google) that mention quite a lot of detail about pulling good images out of the data even if the jitter gets in the way a little, but of course, jitter on a time frame of the life of one pixel dropping down the 128 pixels of TDI is going to cause a lot of trouble.

Sight seing or not, there's still engineering constraints (you can't drive every single day) and human constraints ( restricted sols etc )

That we've had one sol which may not have had driving ( we don't know yet ) - is not only unsuprising, it's to be expected. I'd factor it - even if driving very aggresively, for driving to occur on average, every other day.

Well - it's based on MOC imagery, so no colour to be had really. If someone makes me a fudged-colour one I can do it.

BUT - I think I'll be leaving this little puppy for a few weeks, as I've got another little project I'm on to now, in between the usual thinks like preparing for talks, building my new shed-office, managing the forum, feeding the cat, paying the mortgage, doing Q'n'As with Jim........blah blah blah smile.gif It's a hard life biggrin.gif

Yes - new drugs, but I just ran out - I'm starting to shake....I've been on several of these a day

That's one of those questions that's not worth asking, like the end of the Steve Q'n'A - I actually said I wouldnt ask how long they'll last - it's just one of those things you don't know.

When will Oppy reach Victoria Crater is like, how long's a piece of string.

I could ask how agressive they intend to be with driving, what sort of thing it would take to flag up a science stop, how the rover is in terms of health - But I don't think anyone knows how long it'll actually take.

I've tested Skype, and it's sounding much better now smile.gif Still not perfect, but a lot better ( and infinitely cheaper ) than a phone call biggrin.gif

Things I intend to cover, some odd Pancam issues ( the white pixels down each side, the frames that are just noise etc ) - how was the resolving power of Pancam chosen - and the development of Pancam from way back in the pathfinder days.

And of course, their current status smile.gif

looking to the wrong direction which is not the case.

For all we know, they might have decided to drive in a different direction based on the Navcam imagery, that wasnt covered in the Drive Dir Pancam imagery from the previous sol, and they've taken a day to recharge, take those images, and then move on.

Your suggestion's equally valid though - we'll find out in the next couple of hours.

No - it can't, and infact I'm yet to find anything that can sad.gif It's just one of those formats that you can find dozens of exporters for, but no importers for.

I'm going to have a play with this though - find some interesting ones to have a hack with smile.gif

I'm amazed you've not had a dig at something/someone about this one though Bruce - deployment of devices in space is something you've enjoyed lambasting in the past ( based on Galileo and MEX )

I think JUNO might actually do harm for the 'Europan' cause.

Imagine the discussion up on the hill,

"They're pitching for a mission to Europa"
"Where's that?"
"It's one of the moons of Jupiter, the one that's made of icebergs or something"
"Didn't we just DO Jupiter with that JANO or JOURNO or something?"
"Hmm - you're right - I say we go somewhere else"

I'm sure JUNO is of excellent scientific value, but you can see it leading toward another pause in Jovian exploration.

Woo yay, that works smile.gif

The format isnt great w.r.t getting creative - it's more an exported format more than the sort of format that gets imported into other tools - but I had a look with that java based viewer and it works a treat. I guess that's the highest LOD, I think that the lower LOD's would offer probably the same level of actual detail, but without the excess polys. Imagine a 'ring' of 8 or 9 of these for a full Nav-Pan and it'l going to be 2 megapolys ohmy.gif

Much kudos for getting it working though - it's been 2 years to get here, but now we're nearly there, the potential is utterly huge.

Isnt that the same as many of the MGS images? With that special technique they've got down to 50cm. MRO isn't going to be much of an improvement over MGS?

The very best resolution at which imagery is taken with MOC is about 1.5m across track and 0.5m down track.
MRO can take imagery at 0.3m across and down track.

Now - the actual resolving power is up for debate smile.gif

11cm is too high - the best quoted res is 25 or 30 depending on where you look, and as MC will tell you, the likely resolution is probably more likely to be double that.
