Ahh - thanks to Jim for putting up that Super Res page - that's interesting to see, particularly as it's not really worth trying to do super-res with the JPG's. Meanwhile - Jim's done a transit page as well...including higher-res version of my simulation Mov's http://marswatch.astro.cornell.edu/pancam_...projects_4.html Doug |

, but since HiRISE is apparently using Jpeg2000, I would guess that MER could as well. I wonder whether the compression scheme in MER over For the raw quick-look releases (like we get with MER at the Exp and JPL) HiRise will be J2K, but the calibrated published data down the line will be uncompressed IMG's or similar I'm fairly sure. Not only that, but the rover would have to make the whole way around the crater to it's southern size (northern looking wall) AND find a path into the crater. OR - outside the crater on the northern slope that approaches the rim ? Remember the southern slope they had driving around the southern edge of endurance making Oppy very power-low (in SS's book) Doug |

Yup - it's not as if taking 100,000 images would give you anything more than the 30 or so they did of the heatshield, and the 10-15 or so they did around the festoon targets. I'm not sure how one might make a quantitative estimate on the improvement of resolution in that attempt I made on the Heatshield - it's not a lot though, certainly less than 50% improvement, probably more like 25 or less. It takes features that are 'sort of' there, and brings them out just enough to be believable - I think that's the take Jim had on it. Doug |

Currently Nasa software must be used to view the raw image data, whereas with Jpeg2000 compression the raw images would have been immediately accessible with standard image editing/viewing software. Are you talking about the PDS IMG's - as the rules and regs for what you publish to the PDS are basically set in stone as I understand it. I agree, better quality raw JPG's would be nice, but to be honest, so old and to date, fairly reliable is the system that's putting out the JPG's we see know, I'd not want to see it played with. iirc, you'll get some Jpeg2000 goodness with HiRISE images though Doug |

Given the addition of some post-moi-pre-aerobraking imaging, at what appears to be between about 0000 and 0600 on the 15th of March - any idea on a nadir target for that sort of time? Doug |

Anyone who has read the excellent 'Beyond the Limits' by Ranulph Fiennes will have read about them searching for a lost city in the desert, and found it totally by accident by just digging randomly when local authorities began to suspect they were spies - but a NASA researcher made it to the press first, and claimed they'd found it using NASA imagery - which they hadnt Doug |

Thanks Doug, in which section can I find this ? As a matter of fact, I've seen here that you started your "membership" on feb 8th 04 : that was my 50th birthday !!!! OK, OK, OK, OK no big interest for the discussion... Climber Yup - Feb 8th would have been the day I first got the old forum up and running - hence people celebrating this places 2nd birthday a few days ago...thus....Happy 52nd to you! The section about the raw images is actually the very first question in the most recent update ( update 3 ) and the actual reference is about 2:25 in "having the downlink literally split, as soon as it gets to JPL - it duplicates and one path goes to a routine that automatically converts every image into a JPG and posted on the website as quickly as possible and the other branch of that split goes to the science team" Doug |

I'm may be a little innocent but, are we sure they post images right away or do they kind of have a quick look at them to make sure that a BIG discovery isn't going to be seen by others first ? Take a listen to the latest Pancam update - Jim and I talk about this very issue, how the raw images fit in the flow - and they actually branch off before the images get to the science team. Doug |

But even at 15km/h the problems are huge, and as it, no robot can do it, http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/ 131 miles in 6hrs 53 mins Call it 18mph, or 28kph. Yes - I know - not entirely applicable to lunar exploration - but it's untrue to say 'no robot can do it'. The technology is beginning to be available whereby it's entirely plausable that a rover could operate on the moon at a pace similar to that of the LRV of the Apollo era, unmanned, without totally 'remote' control. if all the martian images we see are just colorized greyscale? They're not. You can get the data here - http://anserver1.eprsl.wustl.edu/navigator...rover=B&sol=294 That panorama, and specifically those frames happened to be taken at a point when the sun was directly behind the dial, and thus reflecting off its surface You can see that even in the raw imagery http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all...unity_p294.html I've gone and made that 'column' of data, and straight out of my normal processing flow I get the first attachment, and the seconds attachment is that image, stretched to maximize dynamic range - and one gets a very similar result to that of the Athena release image. Can we get a new clickable smilie showing the normal response to an atrocious pun? The green one - see above - from the "Post Icons" would come pretty close. You could just use CODE The standard reply for a bad pun is "Oh for goodness sake Bob" There are some guidelines on using the forum - under the 'help' section, top right of the page. Given the number of frames, and the overlap - I'd call that mosaic about 50mm across, 2x30-overlap To put it another way - about as big on each side as the length of your little finger. |

I'm not a geologist, so I havnt a clue if this is right - but if you take an X-section of where we are now, to Mongollon Rim - I think it might look like this.... (just realised - it's Mogollon not Mongollon as I've been calling it? It's like Squyres and Squires all over again |
