It was a good drive though - I'd say half the distance to HP was covered

BFI London (the dedicated London Imax theatre) say they'll make a call on it at the end of this month probably.

The MER battery's have a better thermal profile that your average laptop battery, but the point is fairly true all the same

I think basically - you have to have the rovers 'on' for enough time during the day to pack the WEB with heat to keep it reasonably warm thru the night. Even with deep sleep it's so well insulated that it can keep at sensible temps in there thru the night.

However - once you get to a point when you spend most of your day just charging the batteries and not doing anything, then you're going to get a colder WEB before you go to sleep, and thus a much deeper thermal cycle in there over night. Once you get that deep cycling, then you're in the regieme that ends up with massive thermal cycling on batteries, on telecoms equip - you can't find lock with DTE comms, maybe even the UHF drifts so that Odyssey cant find it, then you get to a solar-power-only mode, and things just spiral from there.

I'm not sure how one might 'fix' that - but what I would do is just leave the rover 'sleeping' till abotu 3pm, and then keep the rover very very busy for an hour, then shut it down for deep sleep - that way you've packed as much energy in at the end of the day to get the WEB as warm as possible before night starts.

I'm guessing they're using that 275w figure as the point at which they cant do enough 'stuff' inside that WEB to keep it warm enough to remain healthy over night

BUT - that is all just my guessing. It might make sense to email an engineer about it smile.gif

No news yet - I doubt they'll send out emails for the 'test' until they have proper imagery ready to go - so end of this month, beginning of next I'd guess

'We wont let them record it because they report our stuff badly'

Yup - and leaving them without a record of what you've said is going to make it worse smile.gif

Very narrow minded imho. Bill Haartman's comments in his Travellers Guide to Mars are so very true re: papers and conferences etc.

I think it just takes a while to filter thru. The imagery probably goes...

MER->Odyssey->DSN->JPL Odyssey Ops->JPL Rover Ops and then branches out three ways...

JPL Raw output -> Exploratorium / JPL
JPL Engineering -> Planning and seqeuencing etc
Cornell Science -> Pancam dept -> Pancam Tracking Page

If one counts spacecraft that 'split' - then the apollo decent stages plus their LSEP's might count seperately, and indeed given their own comms ability, so might the LRV's.

You could take this to the n'th degree I suppose smile.gif

Well- being vessels of exploration, and thus female, and thus stereotyped as a bad map reader, you'll note that Spirt has her map 'upsidedown' smile.gif

As a heads up- Jim told me that the tracking page needs a half hour to an hour to refresh itself to give proper names to the sequences, hence the unexpected tag.

Right - going on my maths - the data should begin to hit the ground about now.

Doug
(PS - GET OUT!! Just updates MMB - new Spirit Data....that's got to be some sort of fluke - perhaps it really does go ZAP - from the ground to the raw site the moment it arrives?)

Look carefully - that first pass isnt being done. - notice that the elevation is very very low - so they drop it - lines 111 and 112 are both dropped. i think the min elev is 10 degrees before they'll do a pass, and anything over 30 degrees they'll run at 256k - although there are exceptions ( which I dont quite understand - perhaps above 70 they have to drop down to 128k again just because of the geometry of it all)

If you add the Return Lat onto the Event Time - you get the Return Time though - I think smile.gif So it's not a case of adding the latency onto the return time as far as I can make out.

It's ballpark anyway. smile.gif Interesting to see the expected data volume in there - amazing how much it varies.

Line 113 would be a 4-pm-ish-local pass, and then there would have been a 4-am-ish-local on line 110. 111 and 112 both dropped. Only if you see a volume and a rate is it actually being done.

And of course, there is often the chance of dropping an AM pass as the rover might be deep-sleeping, and that would be a decision taken fairly close to the actual sol in question and thus wouldnt appear as dropped on these charts which are prepared weeks in advance.

Oh - she's perfectly entitled to lambast the movie - but not to get facts wrong - that's the basics of reporting.

I've emailed SS to ask if he know if/when/why Roving Mars will make it to Europe.

I've also emailed the Imax theatres at the BFI, Science Museum and @Bristol ( the three I have visitied ) to see if they know if/when they will be showing it - as none of the Imax theatres I know of in the UK even have it listed as 'coming soon'

Doug

(reply from @Bristol who say they are going to see it at the end of March and decide if they want to show after that)

PAh - I've added a comment, but I doubt it will be read

""if the mission is successful"

Both rovers have been working on the surface for more than two years.

"The capsule's fiery descent into the Martian atmosphere at Mach-2"

The entry occured at Mach 25.

"This is essentially a tribute to a couple of robots"

And to the people that built them, designed them, and operate them to this day -unarguable the greatest team of engineers and scientists the human race has to offer.

If you are going to offer criticism, please do so accurately."

No doubt if the movie were free, she would moan that her taxes were being wasted in making it.

You might have heard me mention this on the Jim Q'n'A, but couldnt find it smile.gif

Thing to do is work out the DOY ( 2nd of feb = 33 ) - and look for that - then see which passes ( usually two per day ) are mentioned, when they are. Add the return lat onto that ( the last time in each line ) and that's when that data should be on the ground.

i.e. for Spirit, I'm expecting data on the ground at about 13:49 - give it a moment to cycle thru all the servers and so on, and it will probably hit the Exploratorium at something like 14:30ish - there or there abouts.

This way - you can predict roughly when you can expect data to arrive.

It's a bit hard to understand, I might do a reduced PDF or XLS that trims the 'fat' from this lot so it's more readable.

Here's a list of the potential UHF passes over the next few days

But - if you have the promise that a mission will always be completed once started - you'd have people proposing at way under the actual expected budget, getting started and then saying "ahh - we need another $400m, hand it over as we've GOT to complete it"

You have to hang the threat of 'the chop' over missions realistically to get them to propose at a sensible budget, and stick to it. Make a promise that they'll fly no matter what and you'll soon be looking down the back of the sofa for cash smile.gif

I've not had any problem at any point from either work or home. It can't be a server problem as it was working for most people all the time. Perhaps some sort of routing problem in the 'net somewhere.
