Yup - they did live video feeds of the launch - and we have CCTV on Sky digital here and they're showing the launch procedure. Those strap on boosters are liquid fueld, Solid Motors chuck out a lot of smoke, but they didnt, they're more like the old Ariane 4 liquid strap-ons, but I presume much larger. Doug |

QUOTE (Burmese @ Oct 10 2005, 12:41 PM) At least Mars is close to Earth, transmission rates are bumped up for more/faster data downloads, But a UHF pass is a UHF pass. Proximity to earth doesnt really make a difference for Rover Comms. It means Odyssey can downlink a UHF pass quicker to Earth, but for the rovers, that doesnt matter. Doug |

For PTGui you need th biggest, fastest hard drive - that's the main bottle neck I think - as if you look in the folder you're saving to, you'll see HUGE files being generated!! Doug |

The PDS MER imagery (well, just Pancam) is on the geosciences node FTP server (umm...heck, where is it...errr... AHH http://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/dataserv/anonftp.html details there ) BUT - Navcam and Hazcam data isnt in there, Pancam, MI, APXS, Mossbauer, MiniTES, and Des cam is. Other missions in there, Clementine, Magellan, MEX, MGS, MPF, NEAR, MODY, VIKO, VIKL, Venera.. Things I really REALLY want them to have in there, MER Engineering camera data, and the RAD Pathfinder data set HERE however - http://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/data/ - is everything from the imaging node, and indeed, using a program called surf-offline ( it's terrible, but it just about works ) I got SOME stuff off their, including the Sojourner CD. Perhaps MRO will begin to answer some of those questions. I think Sojourner will JUST be visible, if we're lucky, very lucky, from HiRISE Doug |

Well - these things have to spin at thousands, tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of RPM - (I've seen numbers between 6,000 and 60,000 rpm) and have their speed adjusted to impart forces onto the spacecraft...for day after day after day after day...... They just fail...they've failed on Hubble, they've failed on the ISS, it's just one of those components that dies eventually. Doug |

There is motion but not seemingly of the actual wheels, i.e as if the rover just settled a little. Sol 623 at 1206 is the time I have for RHAZ images Doug |

What confuses me is that it says Illumination, Upper Left. MOC imagery is almost always illuminated from the left - as the local time is about 2pm when MGS goes overhead and thus, with north at the top - the sun is to the left - granted, that goes out the window when you're right down by the poles - but still, it SAYS upper left... However - it really does look like something tall, illuminated from lower right. Doug |

As seen from Meteosat 7 Small and fast ( 0.7 meg ) http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/doug_im...clipse_smal.gif Large and slower ( 2 meg ) http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/doug_im...nim_eclipse.gif Those are Vis images, but the effect is visible in IR images, a slight bright patch moving across as well - showing the cooling effects of the eclipse. Did anyone see the Sky at Night last night? Good DPS coverage, great interviews with JZ, CP and SS - but frankly, the highlight was the closing image at the end of the credits, it was a pancam frame with vertical exageration (i..e Phil-O-Vision) I'll take a screen grab tonight and post it - but it looked like one of ours Doug |

They've done that mid-drive navcam mosaic's very rarely - infact I think the last few days with Oppy are the first time I've seen it. It makes for good mapping of the outcropping, which is obviously an interesting thing to look at. Doug |
