No - you do - the design for the CEV launcher is basically a shuttle SRB with a liquid upperstage. Arguably the most silly idea for some time - the thrust and thus acceleration profile will be astonishing.

All the media here in the UK were spouting off about how the Shuttle had been damaged and mission controllers were increasingly concerned...when actualy - they were increasingly UNconcerned smile.gif

If the cool duplicator machine we had at work did DVD's and not just CD's - then I'd run off copies at cost, but to put MER data on CD would be just WAHGHGHGHG

I have all this on an external HDD, obviously - but I like to have a backup of all the data I've spent time downloading....(cough ahem, FTP download using work's connection over the weekend tongue.gif )

So I whack it all on CD or DVD - here's the MER collection so far -

On the left - the VL1 and VL2 CD's - both contain around 550 Mb

Then, the three Pathfinder IMP Cd's

Next - the Sojourner CD - That's one I made myself after downloading the entire contents of the browseable website.

Then...the big guns...all those ones on the right at just Pancam data - the IMG's - and the PNG's to accompany them all - and each one is a DVD smile.gif About 35 gig each so far

And I'd like to introduce Suzi - she's the fuzzy thing at the back smile.gif Helen and I got here a week ago and she's ace smile.gif She likes Sojourner - thats the one she picked out to stand on while I was trying to grab a picture smile.gif (further suzi pic - http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/doug_images/suzi_cd.jpg )

Oh - and Spirit Sols 329 -> 360 was just printing when I took that.

I'm now going to start downloading the navcam data from the browseable websites, then hazcam..

then MI from the FTP

It's all good smile.gif

This is the thing - you cant keep the horizon and the nearground in stereo.

The thing to do is to pick the point of interest - be it a particular rock, a particular crater rim etc etc - and co-register the two channels at that point.

You may find that 3 versions of the same anaglyph show good stereo for near, middle, and far distances.

I think it'll be like gambling. Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose, but eventually, the house will always win and the output drops below a critical level.

I thought it looked like the foam right infront of the ET camera was actually wobbling during the climb up the hill - did anyone else see that?

If you replace the filename tags at the end of a single product URL with one from between Sol 271 and 360 - you get the page - but it'll flag up a username/password for the preview PNG's - however the links to IMG files work

I thought for a second it might have been someone in the cockpit using flash photography, then I thought perhaps RCS (but that's not going to happen at that low altitude) Window glint is the most likely, I agree smile.gif

Has anyone seen the maps on the workbook? the next data release is sort of half-out ( some of it is, some of it isnt ) and I assume as part of that there's a cracking update of the system which includes a sitemap and overlays of where imagery has been taken :0

As previously reported, there's a great lineup of speakers at the BAA out of London meeting on September 3rd - including MER Principle Investigator Steve Squyres.

Steve has kindly offered some of his time so that we can meet up and do a Q'n'A based on questions submitted by you lot.

Obviously - there will be loads and loads of questions you want to ask and only so much time in which to ask them - however - I'll do what I can to pick as many of the best as I can squeeze in in the time available.

There will be a write up here, obviously, and I will try and record it as an MP3 and post that here as well.

Steve's book 'Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity and the Exploration of the Red Planet' is published next week - and a signed copy will be winging its way to the person submitting the best question! *

If you have questions you want me to pitch to Steve, then drop me an email to doug@rlproject.com with the subject SS Q&A

As a heads up - please take note of the other speakers at the BAA meeting - and if you have specific questions you'd like asked of them - I'll do my best to try and get them in after their presentations at the meeting. The last two ( Profs Greeley and Muller ) are on the Sunday and the Friday respectively, but I will be trying to get down to those presentations as well - but no promises.

-Prof. Carolyn Porco, Principal investigator, Cassini imaging system
-Prof. John Zarnecki, Principal investigator, Huygens surface science
-Prof. Mike A'Hearn, Principal Investigator, Deep Impact,
-Prof. Ron Greeley, Scientist on several planetary missions, Chairman of NASA & NAS Mars exploration panel
-Prof. Jan-Peter Muller, Scientist on Mars Express hi-resolution camera team, University College London.

Doug

That ET footage was fantastic- did you see the SSME plume growing during assent - and the RCS firing, along with the OMS burn just after ET sep - it was brilliant - good to see that they cleared the issue they had with the SRB-Sep motors fogging the camera from the last time they did this.

I'm not a fan of ISS/Shuttle - BUT - you cant help but be in awe of it all when it goes right.

God speed the crew of Discovery.

It's far from black on all the systems I use...CRT's at work ( two different ones ) LCD on my laptop, and LCD for my home machine

Perhaps you need to fiddle with contrast/brightness?
