Who knows if or when they will publish all the individual frames of which there must be several thousand. They have said they were going to do that, and there are several thousand RDC raw frames on the website already, so why don't you give them a chance? It is only sol 13. |

Do you think we might get the actual videos? I would bet there are higher quality videos on the rover... This is educated speculation from reading the EDLcam paper and from what was said at the press conferences. What was sent down initially was the ffmpeg output produced onboard in the EDLcam Linux computer from the raw frames, and they are in the process of downlinking those raw frames now. What's on the raw images website from EDLcam in cases where the raw frame hasn't come down are the frames that were extracted from the ffmpeg file, and then processed however that website processes images in general. So there aren't any "higher quality videos" on the rover. Basically what fredk said. |

LRO has imaged each of the landed Chang'e missions, so presumably MRO can image the Tianwen-1 lander. I don't know if it applied to LROC imaging, but there needed to be congressional approval for at least some LRO support. See https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/...ion-with-china/ |

However, I wonder why Mars24 and JSON files refer to LMST rather than LTST? Local True Solar Time takes into account the equation of time so it's more relevant isn't it? Yes, but LMST is easier to calculate and typically what's used for rover planning. We have enough trouble keeping track of what happens when without having a variable length of day too! |

On the rover there is an apparent fabric material... Beta cloth. https://bronaerotech.com/product/ba-500bc-cf500f-beta-cloth/ |

This matches MSL Mastcam Left then Correct. Original MCZ spec was for 34mm to 100mm but we ended up with some extra credit range and can do 26mm to 110mm. Typically values 26, 34, 48, 63, 79, 100, and 110 will be used, but AFAIK nobody is sure yet how they'll be chosen. Zoom has to be stowed at 26mm for driving, so that might motivate use of that setting sometimes. |

Thanks for the links. I tried the code but it gave very low values and fluctuating results for the Mastcam-Z focal length. Seems like, for the one case I looked at, that the values in the JSON are in the order VORCAH instead of CAHVOR as one would expect. I don't know if this is intentional or a bug. And I'm not sure if these models are actually correct anyway. But you could take a look. |

Do color calibration targets ever fade (change color) from solar (and worse) radiation on Mars? How are they tested on Earth and proven to not fade? https://mastcamz.asu.edu/mars-in-full-color/ QUOTE At the University of Winnipeg, the effect of intense Mars-like ultraviolet (UV) light on the colors of the eight materials was studied, confirming that the materials will only change very little with UV-exposure through a long mission at the Martian surface. Typically, they get dusty before fading would be an issue. Hopefully these magnets work better than the last time. |

For future use, does anyone know how to obtain the zoom value from the JSON information? Should it be derived from the CAHVOR data? Should be if the CAHVOR model is set correctly, which they may or may not be at this point. See https://github.com/bvnayak/CAHVOR_camera_model and https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi...29/2003JE002199 |

So, I'm wondering of someone here can easily lookup the Jupiter location/coordinates of JNCE_2020101_26C00014_V01-raw.png pixel x:1541 y:3402, which looks to be the center of a few pixels wide (possibly elongated) bright red spot. Looks like about 71N 157W, so much farther north. But that does look like something. |

Nothing jumping out at me in the Io images, though I applaud the effort. We did this mostly to test the timing scheme for the upcoming close encounters (you'll note we didn't have to take a full spin of image for these). We got closer to Io but only after it was in eclipse, so this wasn't a great opportunity. |

It's as if the raw image site is just plain dead, almost 3 days after the landing. My memory might be fading, but I don't recall this sort of thing happening with MSL. MSL conveniently landed on a Monday. Most of this, as far as I can tell, is due to a "5-day-a-week during business hours" mentality on the part of somebody and not being able to have a press conference over the weekend. I don't know of anyone on the team that agrees with this policy, but it is above our pay grade. |
