Red Poker is the target she has just been looking at (she backed up a bit before taking the image to get a better view).

Tick Bush is where she drove to, ~4.5m away

I suspect Steve was making a joke about the progression 2005, 2010, 2020... (somewhat apt with post 1111!) maybe a wink.gif or similar would have been in order.

Even at the Earth's poles you are still only the tiniest fraction of a degree above or below the ecliptic.

Without some complex calculation the Earth ground tracks have very little connection to a solar orbit. Certainly not enough to say anything by eyeballing it.

QUOTE (DFinfrock @ Jul 5 2013, 03:34 AM) *
A.J.S. Rayl's new Planetary Society monthly update on Oppy is online.

An intriguing and tantalising snippit:

QUOTE
Meanwhile, the engineers are even looking into the possibility of "reviving" Joint 1, the azimuth joint, which controls the horizontal movement of the IDD, Nelson said. This joint has long been out of service because of stalls. "We have believed that the joint was un-useable, but maybe it's not as dead as we think," Nelson said. "Right now, we are just looking into the possibilities."

Hmmm, you don't suppose that the shadow in a hotspot to the left of Endurance Cr really is a hotspot and shadow???

I can't quite beleve we are talking about this again nearly a decade later, but that 'hotspot' is the opposition surge with the shadow of Oppy's parachute near the centre.

No, I wouldn't be concerned.

Yes there is a bit of damage, yes there will be 10x as much when we get to Mt Sharp, but the wheels will still be fine to drive on, this was expected.

I don't think there is any reason to be worried at this point.

I know we're all in withdrawal but hang in there folks, I'm sure we'll get our fix soon. smile.gif

QUOTE (iMPREPREX @ Jan 5 2013, 11:30 PM) *
What does E1, E2, E3 mean?

E = Product type. E = 'normal', I = Thumbnail, + a whole load of others for uncompressed, focus stacks, etc.

Number is a version number, i.e. if more data arrived for a procuct a new version is made.

QUOTE (iMPREPREX @ Jan 5 2013, 11:30 PM) *
the part after "MR" where is says "08190"

That is the sequence ID, all images taken together as part of one sequence share the same number.

Holy wow!! blink.gif Does this include all the MR images from this pan that have been downlinked so far? Are there more thumbnails down that indicate that there are other areas yet to be filled in?

Yes, that is (just about, as of a couple of days ago) all that have been downlinked so far. And yes, there are loads more thumbnails, so there is much more to come. blink.gif smile.gif

QUOTE (elakdawalla @ Nov 14 2012, 11:13 PM) *
Another question: There's a noticeable boundary in the panorama toward the right edge, where it's clear that the images were taken at very different times of day. Is there a reason you didn't choose to place that boundary at the edge of the panorama? I don't see a correspondingly jarring one on the left side of the pan.

I have not adjusted the postition of the wrap boundary at all, doing anything with this much data is a click into the unknown. It is essentially centred on the first image taken. There are a number of boundaries where images are taken at very different times which made the matching a bit of a headache at times! I will use this version to refine my next. This was mainly a first attempt to see it I could actually handle this much data (success!) there will be more refinements as more data comes in.

BTW, for those zooming in, I have noticed the black dots/line across the middle. I think this is a bug/limitation in Enblend with very large images. I may try to complile a newer version, I'm using the old version that comes with Hugin for OSX. Failing that I need to find a way of editing it out (or find or write a new blender)

That is the REMS UV sensor

From http://msl-scicorner.jpl.nasa.gov/Instruments/REMS/
QUOTE
The UV sensor will be located on the rover deck and is composed of six photodiodes in the following ranges: 315-370 nm (UVA), 280-320 nm (UVB), 220-280 nm (UVC), 200-370 nm (total dose), 230-290 nm (UVD), and 300-350 nm (UVE), with an accuracy better than 8% of the full range for each channel, computed based on Mars radiation levels and minimum dust opacity. The photodiodes face the zenith direction and have a field of view of 60 degrees. The sensor will be placed on the rover deck without any dust protection. To mitigate dust degradation, a magnetic ring has been placed around each photodiode with the aim of maximizing their operational time. Nevertheless, to evaluate dust deposition degradation, images of the sensor will be recorded periodically. Comparison of these images with laboratory measurements will permit evaluation of the level of dust absorption.

The sol 50 MR mosaic is very incomplete - but with that horizon view who could resist!

Click for size options including zoomify and a (quite frankly ridiculous) 42520 pixel (~180 degree) wide, full resolution version.

Love the Zoomify! It should come as standard for these big pans from Curiosity. (Also your colours are still my benchmark for the way Mars really looks.) Zoomify should also work for anaglyphs, no?

Glad you like it. I'm steadly trying to simplify/automate the production of my mosaics including making the zoomify version, they make a lot of sense for huge mastcam pans and are much better for browsing on a tablet. And yes, anaglyphs should work fine.

My version of the sol 54 MR mosaic, full resolution. Edit: Added Zoomify version

Am I right in thinking that this is Glenelg? The three units being the foreground, background and the wedge of bedrock (high TI unit) coming in from the left. The actual triple point being a bit right/up from centre?
