Great another pool. smile.gif

So the first DD was seen on sol 421, add one M-year gets us to 1089/1090.

Now on one hand DD's are going to be much harder to see this year, we can't see much of the plains and being back at 'plain level' they will not have the ground as a backdrop making them harder to see. On the other hand though, the team knows when to start looking and at what time of day this year.

Hmm, difficult, I think I'm going to go with 1094.

If JamesCanvin's image is at full resolution (~25cm/pixel), the ~100 pixel length of the shadow + ~41 degree angle of the sun -> height of ~22 meters. Not as impressive as I initially thought, but still as tall as a nine-story building.

No it's not. Here is the full res version - double the size so it's ~44m tall.

Oh and on refinding the mount I realized that my pixel coordinates in the filenames, taken from the 'center' values in Expressview are screen pixels and are therefore wrong if not zoomed in all the way. So some of the coordinates given so far will be wrong.

Since the Odyssey safe mode seems to have thrown a spanner in the works as far a images MER images are concerned, we'll have to make do with what we have. So here is the Bottomless Bay mosaic with luminosity from the full resolution L2 and colour from the L257 64x64 thumbnails. pancam.gif smile.gif

And the Becquerel crater image is just beyond words! A screen shot doesn't really do it justice, if you can manage the 1.2Gb download then you really should get it. smile.gif

Nonetheless here is a screen shot anyway. ohmy.gif

There are quite a few big rocks on Clark Hill, one of those is probably what you see.

Not as big as these monsters though! (On Chawla Hill I think, although I'm a little lost. unsure.gif )

The warm little pond theory may well be proven false in the near future. It has only been a theory that has to my knowledge "not" been proven.

Quite right I'm sure, I'm no expert on this.

All I was really trying to point out is that Steve Squyres has commented recently on this issue as you "hoped" and that that was (I think, I haven't had the chance to watch it again) his take on the matter.

According to the tracking site that image is pointed at -19 degrees (-18 after you account to the 1 degree toe-in I think). So the right hand edge is at -10, which means it will miss Endurance. sad.gif

I hope that Steve Squires has at least noted recently that extremely acidic environments on earth are not barren of life but do support strong colonies of microorganisms. What this means on Mars should not preclude that life does not exist. To the contrary with regards to the recent images and future images to come:)

Have you watched/listened to SS talk at the OU? In the Q'n'A, when asked about the prospects of life he mentions that although life can survive well on earth in extremely acidic environments it is not clear that it can come into being in one. On earth, the microorganisms formed in a more benign environment and *then* evolved into being able to tolerate the harsh conditions.

Next,

Kind of a watershed moment with tosols drive (1039), Spirit has lost her north tilt, we have left the 'haven'. smile.gif wheel.gif

I'm sure it does,

Well I was wrong, SS said in his Planetary Soc. interview that it hadn't been named and in the tracking site schedule for tosol (1019) lists the observation as just:

The rover tracks are, with more or less accuracy, contained within that contour lines.

And for people looking for them: Just off the summit you need to look slightly outside the box. wink.gif The tracks are visible almost all the way from the summit to Haskin Ridge just below the lower contour.

Nice work James! Could I beg for someone to crop out the section around "Pitcher's Mound";

The Pitcher's Mound is in the original crop d released by the HiRISE folks, but since you asked so nicely here is a crop of just the mound.

Is my memory correct in that the MOC-NA images were roughly equivalent to the MER's L1 (clear) filter (~500-1000 nm)?

Yep.

QUOTE (Pertinax @ Dec 6 2006, 08:29 AM) *
Was the comparison image from MRO from the red (~700nm (~L/R2 or ~L3)) or Blue/Green (~535nm (~L5)) filter? My assumption was red though that was rather groundless though.

Yes the red, look at the filename. I think all the greyscale images have been 'red'

Speculation time. Hirise targeting has been flawless, so I doubt the one missing spacecraft was missed because of that. Therefore I don't think it was Pathfinder.

I took it that the missed one was MGS.
