If my understanding of the rover quaternians is right then I reckon Spirit lost less than 1 degree of north tilt during this manouver. It's now about 10 degrees (cf. 11 before), good news. smile.gif

Well the Cape Verde pan is a bit of a mess at the moment, but since it's a competition, here's my entry. wink.gif

Yes, but not yet. This will will just be the long awaited clockwise turn to put some of the thin outcrop within arms reach.

Still a little missing data, but after the long conjunction I thought it about time to get something out. I'll produce a more refined version, better colour, sky added etc, for the final version.

...clockwise around the crater. We haven't decided how far we'll go in that direction, but it seems clear that some of the most intriguing geology we can see from the rim is to be found that way.

This strikes me as quite an odd thing to say, as at this point the beacon hides a lot of the clockwise rim. It's no surprise that CStM is the next target smile.gif , but I would have reserved a decision on clockwise vs anticlockwise till we got there and could actually see more of the the north rim. Then again they do have the HiRise. cool.gif

A 360 from the beacon please Jim/Steve. pancam.gif wink.gif

Last time I counted Oppy was the one with more things wrong (shoulder joint and steering actuator vs just a wheel motor). Although none of these are a threat to the mission so don't have anything to do with them 'dying'. Granted Spirits wheel problem is more of a disability at this stage, but I have no doubt that she can still make significant progress this summer.
Power levels are on the rise too, so far from dying I think Spirit is starting to 'come back to life'. And as others have said all we need is one good cleaning event - which given the summer atmospheric activity we saw last year is not unlikely - and Spirit will be in great health. smile.gif

Dying is a strong word - and a totally inappropiate one for either rover at this stage in my opinion. smile.gif

Well HiRISE has the resolution and we know it has amazing signal to noise, but I fear that dust deposition over that last decade will have rendered the tracks with nearly zero contrast over the surrounding ground so that even HiRISE can't see them. But we'll see...

I'm just hoping we can see the little rover - or even just see that it is not where we left it. smile.gif It would be VERY cool to know that Sojourner set off exploring on her own after we lost contact. cool.gif

I thought I'd join the party...

Victoria fits nicely into Bondi Bay - (you can see my place in this image smile.gif ).

Attached Image

The main span of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is too short for Victoria (503m), but will bridge F2/3 to L2/3. (Note The Opera House, bottom)

Attached Image

And it turns out I've taken a mosaic of the bridge from a ferry at about where Cape Verde is in this image. So here is how Oppy sees the scene. smile.gif

Yeah, from Steve's above post I would say that Oct 30 seems right, the new update must be in error.

I guess there is no harm in trying to transmit data - even if a lot of it doesn't make it through, at least a few scraps should let the engineers know all is well.

The end of conjunction date in the Spirit update has changed! Climber quoted that conjunction would end on Oct 30th now the next update says:

QUOTE
Solar conjunction will begin on sol 991 (Oct. 16, 2006) and end on sol 1015 (Nov. 10, 2006). During this period, both NASA rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, will not receive any new command loads, but they will send daily downlinks to Earth, averaging 15 megabits of data per transmission. The data will be relayed to Earth via NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft in orbit above Mars.

Nov 10th, can that really be right? sad.gif

Good news that they will still be trying to downlink a little. smile.gif

No. Using the stretched jpegs with no calibration files, true colour is impossible. It is however a guess at a 'realistic' colour.

And i've just noticed that there is a Cabo Frio ture colour image on the pancam site which shows that I'm not that far off - still a bit to much contrast though.

Yup still in Sydney. Escaped to the Blue Mountains to avoid the heat at the weekend though.

Looks like the data flow has stopped for the conjuction now. So I'll post the partial colour Duck Bay pan that I wasn't going to bother with.

It's definitely not the Columbia Hills - too hazy as you say. But my gut said it's even too hazy to be Thira. The shots from the summit of Husband showed Thira less hazily than this new image, and there should be much less dust around now. Also Thira is very far away, so I wouldn't expect that much change in POV since Husband. So my gut said Gusev rim.

Yeah after I posted that, I started to worry that it wasn't very convicing. Good work on matching to the Gusev rim. smile.gif

One thing I had not appreciated until I looked at at the anaglyph, is that that bedrock section in Duck Bay does stick out a bit, like a small cape. And pre-arrival when I first labeled the capes on the MOC image I even labeled it - P5.

L2/R2 anaglyph - registered as I prefer it (looking through the screen). Use stereophotomaker if you want to adjust it. smile.gif

I'm sure none of the Columbia hills could look that hazy, especially during the nice clear winter.

I think the features match up with that view of Thira from the summit - considering that the POV has changed a bit. And the bearing is right 55-60 degrees.

It's the north rim of Thira Crater I think.

Compare with this from HH summit.
