This isn't as good a Phil's as I've just upped the brightness/contrast in the shadowed regions and haven't reprocessed from scratch, but it is in colour. smile.gif

Another way of looking at it: MRO will see Victoria's far rim nearly as well as Oppy can! The resolution of Oppy's pancam on the far rim of Victoria is about 22cm/pixel - pretty comparable with the 30cm/pixel from MRO. cool.gif

And the details are starting to show up...Priceless... smile.gif :

I haven't got time to do the maths but from previous work I would bet that your match is wrong. I think we're looking at a much smaller part of the rim. I would guess that the whole feature is between your rightmost two circles.

Tim, thanks for the reply. Now you mention it those do 'look' further. Is there any way of estimating the distance based on how 'hazy' the hills look and the atmospheric Tau?

The rear hazcam is from yestersol and the 3 navcams are from tosol but just to complete the 360 from this location.

No driving tosol, it's pancams we're waiting for tosol! smile.gif

Very poetic Doug, great words.

"adventure of a lifetime": It truly had been, and still is. I don't believe there will be anything like MER again, MSL will be great but I don't expect it to be the same. Not only have the rovers pioneered the exploration of Mars in a way never seem before, but as they have done so we have constantly pioneered new ways to follow them on there journey. I often look back at old threads in this forum and am always amazed at how things have changed. The creativity and ingenuity of people here has been just mind blowing at times. I feel totally privileged to have been part of it, it's been as much of a journey for me as it has for our two intrepid friends on Mars.

Long may it continue...

Since the main Victoria thread is now explicitly about Duck Bay and the surrounds here is another for far rim discussions.

Quite a bit more has been revealed after the last drives. Here's the MOC/Navcam match.

And a special mention to Ilbasso who in the original pool some 14 months ago was the closest (875). Not only that, but if you discount the 80 sols we spent at Erebus (651 - 731, the first 'real' drive) he was only 3 sols out! wink.gif

Good call Doug.

Horay we've arrived! smile.gif ...21 sols off, dammit!

I agree, it must be 7x2, 14x1 (>180) would overlap with a lot of the cape images from 952

14 pointing colour pancam mosaic of Duck Bay up for tosol! And does the "1" mean that there is more to come? Could this be an 'arrival' pan afterall?

(What time-of-sol does Oppy normally shoot her photos, by the way?)

Yestersol the navcams were started at 13:34 LST and the pancams at 13:37 so yes the sun would have been much higher in the sky. But that's not the point smile.gif I love the shots with the sun added, lens flare and all, good work Stu.

I'm really glad that Opportunity picked a small crater to land in!

Can you imagine how quickly the swear jar would have filled up if the first images from Oppy had been from the centre of Victoria looking up at all these cliffs! Everybody went nuts for just a couple of inches of outcrop as it was!

btw, yes I am aware that we are well outside the landing ellipse and this never could have happened. But just imagine!

Cheers Mike, that was quick, what with us all gawping at Vicky I didn't expect it for a while.

The export pan function is really handy for making the 'North at the top' polars for route map plotting. Last time I filled in for Tesheiner, making those by hand was a pain. In fact I was close to writing my own utility to write pan project files from the tracking data.

I could really have done with one extra navcam frame left and right but here is my best guess at the sol 951 position.

The side just touching Cabo Frio, yes.
But look to the ramp just starting at the right side of the image; it seems to be fine and not very steep.

Yeah I saw your first post after posting mine - I see what you mean, could be OK, I'll have to do some maths tomorrow I think!

Wow, the right side of Duck Bay is steep, that isn't the 18 degrees that we measured on the other side!

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that if the prevailing winds come from the south (as the dark streaks on the north suggest) then it makes sense that the exposed south facing rim would be steeper.
